Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Brooke Sandin.
Hi Sarah Brooke , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Stables Savannah was founded in 2018 by artists Sarah Brooke Sandin and Ryan Lawrence, born from a shared desire to create a space that didn’t already exist in the city. One that prioritized freedom, experimentation, and grit over polish. It began as a conversation between two artists and became a full-blown creative compound nestled in an industrial corridor just outside downtown Savannah off of Louisville Road. They envisioned a place where artists could not only make work, but showcase it, document it, and gather with others doing the same.
At its core, The Stables was built out of necessity. Sarah and Ryan were tired of trying to wedge themselves into pre-existing boxes and wanted to offer a new model—an open-ended, artist-first space that felt raw, real, and local. We got a warehouse and renovated with artists in mind. Over time, the space evolved organically, shaped by the people who used it. From private studios and gallery installations to pop-ups, shoots, and underground performances, The Stables became known for its mix of edge and intimacy.
The name came naturally: The Stables. A place to house a stable of artists. A place that’s equal parts wild and grounded. We were inspired by the all ages, DIY spaces we both frequented as youth. And that energy has drawn in a unique mix of creatives who thrive in the in-between. Between disciplines, between commercial and experimental, between structure and freedom.
Today, The Stables remains unapologetically independent. It’s still artist-bred, artist-run, deeply local, and refreshingly unpretentious. It’s the kind of place where a poet, a fashion photographer, a sculptor, and a punk band might all be working under the same roof—and no one blinks twice. Because here, that’s the point. The Stables isn’t just a venue. It’s a community, a mindset, and a challenge to the idea that art needs white starkness and corporate backing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the underground scene here in Savannah. The support, the energy, and the people who’ve shown up and poured themselves into this space have made it everything we dreamed it could be—and more. So far, word of mouth has carried us beautifully. It’s been a very organic process, and that’s something we’re proud of.
That said, we’re starting to branch out a bit with our outreach. We want to make sure we’re not just reaching the people already in the loop, but also those who may not have found us yet—creatives, collaborators, and community members who would thrive in a space like this. We’re stepping into this next phase with the same spirit we started with: grounded, intentional, and artist-led—but now with a wider lens and a bigger vision for what’s possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At our core, we create space for art, for risk-taking, for community, and for people who don’t fit neatly into boxes. The Stables is a multidisciplinary creative compound built by working artists, for working artists. We specialize in providing raw, flexible studio space and an environment that encourages process over perfection. Whether it’s a painter needing a place to work, a photographer shooting a campaign, or a musician looking for an off-the-grid venue, we welcome it all. It’s not about being polished—it’s about being real and a little rough around the edges.
We’re probably best known for the feeling people get when they walk in. There’s this mix of warmth, grit and grace. What we’re most proud of is that it’s been entirely grassroots. There is no investors, no outside funding, just two artists and a community willing to show up and help build something from the ground up.
What sets us apart is that we don’t operate like a traditional gallery or rental space. There’s no gatekeeping here. We say yes a lot more than we say no. We love to accommodate whatever creative thought someone may have. We care deeply about making art accessible and giving people permission to experiment, collaborate, and be seen, even if they have never done an art show or production in their lives. In a world that’s increasingly curated and commercialized, we like to think The Stables offers something refreshingly human and back to the joy of being an artist. No intimidation here.
