Today we’d like to introduce you to Bella Monzo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hey there! Thank you so much for having me! π
My love for film has been growing for as long as I can remember, but Iβd say it truly began at homeβjust outside of Philadelphia, PA! My dad introduced me to movies that shaped my passion, while my mom instilled the creative, organizational, and teamwork skills that now fuel my producing work.
Films like Alien (1979), An American Werewolf in London, Jaws, and Panβs Labyrinth were pivotal in sparking my creative vision. I was completely mesmerized by the power of storytelling and visual artistry, which led me to pursue filmmaking as a career.
Now, Iβm in my final year at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), studying Film and Television with a focus on producing. Throughout my time here, Iβve had the incredible opportunity to work on a range of productions, from student-led projects to films made under the SAG Micro-Budget Agreement with a $20,000 budget.
Iβm beyond thrilled to bring projects to life here, especially with such a passionate team and the support of my incredible mentors at SCAD! Through my school projects, Iβve worked closely with the Savannah Film Commission and the Savannah Police Department to ensure security for productions, which has been such an eye-opening experience. I also have the privilege of serving as a resident mentor for incoming freshmen, helping younger students navigate their creative journeysβwoohoo!
My most recent project, Downtown Disarray, is a modern Western short film that was an ambitious and rewarding challenge. As a producer, I tackled things from managing a $12,000 budget to overseeing a 60-person cast and crew, all while navigating a year-long pre-production process. The experience strengthened my leadership and problem-solving skills and reinforced the power of collaboration in filmmaking.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any creative journey, mine has had its fair share of challenges!
One of the biggest personal obstacles Iβve faced is my diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which I was diagnosed with at the age of seven. JIA is an autoimmune disease that causes joint pain, swelling, and fatigue, making it tough to keep up with my peers growing up. But through it all, I learned resilience, patience, and the importance of listening to my body. Iβm incredibly grateful to be in remission, though I still have tough days here and there. When that happens, I remind myself that rest is just as important as the hustle!
And of course, the world of film and school projects is full of unexpected hurdlesβbudget limitations, logistical puzzles, and the constant βhow do we make this work with what we have?β challenge.
After wrapping Downtown Disarray, I had a tight turnaround for my second thesis film, which begins production this spring. Itβs definitely been a crash course in balancing multiple projects while keeping everything running smoothly.
But honestly, I thrive in high-energy, collaborative environments, and every challenge has only reinforced my love for this industry. Iβm lucky to be surrounded by an incredible support system of peers, mentors, and family, who remind me that no matter how stressful things get, Iβm never in this alone (and neither are you!).
Thanks β so what else should our readers know about your work and what youβre currently focused on?
I specialize in producing, with a strong focus on logistics, delegation, and creative problem-solving!
From Movie Magic Budgeting to hands-on creative input, I love working with all aspects of production. I have experience in both narrative and documentary filmmaking, and Iβve developed a reputation for keeping productions organized while fostering an environment where creativity can thrive.
One of the things that sets me apart is my versatility. I talk about this a lot, but I truly believe in being a βjack of all tradesβ while maintaining a strong foundation in my primary role.
My background in fine arts, sculpture, and special effects makeup allows me to communicate effectively with different departments, making me a stronger producer. I also place a huge emphasis on security and well-being on setβsomething Iβve been able to refine through my work with the Savannah Film Commission and local authorities.
One of my proudest achievements was bringing Downtown Disarray to life under industry-standard permit regulations while ensuring a smooth and safe production process for everyone involved. Managing a large budget, coordinating locations, and supporting my team every step of the way was an incredible experience that only deepened my love for producing. Seeing our hard work come to life was a moment Iβll never forget!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Savannah has such a special place in my heart! The film community here is incredibly supportive and tight-knit, which is something I love most about it.
Thereβs a deep appreciation for the arts, and the city’s historic charm makes it a dream location for storytelling. Iβve been so lucky to work with amazing local businesses and residents who truly champion student filmmakersβwithout that kind of support, projects like Downtown Disarray wouldnβt have been possible!
