Today we’d like to introduce you to Melvin Campbell.
Hi Melvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started a family owned tour business in 1996. Our desires were to introduce our culture to the world travelers that frequently arrived at Hilton Head.
Then as today we traveled through our neighborhoods, highlighting the uniqueness of our West African based culture.
Our story highlights the significant links of our diet, language, spiritually and more to our African ancestry..
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most challenging issues includes continuing with authentic storytelling. We also experimented some difficulties making inroads into the established culture of Tourism as it was known on Hilton Head.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a lifelong educator with 40 years of classroom teaching in public schools in Massachusetts and Hilton Head. I am continually finding methods to enrich the base of others. I am passionate about community and to that end, intricately involved with the issues of the gullah community
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
You can engage in some of the ongoing discussions as it pretends to the Gullah community along this southeastern coast. We are constantly battling issues from land preservation to gentrification. These are not without issues of drainage and sewage, and other day to day challenges just maintaining our ever changing landscape
