Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Boyd.
Hi Deborah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My work history began in Dalton, Georgia in the floor covering and interior design industry. I developed an expertise, after many years, in reclaimed hardwood flooring and European Axminister and Wilton carpet. Pairing that with an obsession of the history and craftsmanship of antique furniture and both early and contemporary art, led me to opening an antique mall in early 2009.
Hodge Podge Antiques began with 6000 sq. ft. and gradually added additional space as we developed our business in Monroe, Georgia. In 2017 we moved to our current location in a historic cotton mill that has been redeveloped where we currently have our 48,000 sq ft showroom. The move was a perfect fit for our business as it created a way to preserve local history while creating a modern vibrant environment for selling our products.
Although our main business objective is to sell art and antiques, we also assist with local interior design projects that include modern flooring and area rugs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. It has definitely not been a smooth road. We opened the shop in 2009, right after the 2008 economic housing crisis when many people were losing their homes. Our business is certainly home related. Fortunately, we had amazing dealers who stuck with us until we could get the business established.
There have been ups and downs throughout the years, but we kept pushing through and are grateful to have those loyal dealers for sticking it out with us.
When we first started the business there were two other antique shops in town. Presently there are ten antique shops and antique malls which make the area a major destination for shopping. Yes, there is more competition, but we all sell different types of antiques.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We had a gentleman come through right after we opened at our current location who told me, “I can buy anything you have in this shop on the internet.” This is what I told him. “Yes, but you can’t get that feeling you get when you see something your mother had or something your grandmother had or a toy you played with when you were young.” Our business comes with a feeling of nostalgia that just makes you feel good. People can forget about their worries because you get distracted with interesting items and our creative dealers give you a first rate visual of how this might look in your home.
I am also most proud of our dealers and staff who, because of who they are and how much they enjoy this business, have created an energy in the shop that makes shopping with us so much fun.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family – my kids are my cheerleaders, and my husband is my mentor.
Also, through the years my customers have played a big role in my determination to stick with the business. I never wanted to let them down.
