Meet Dan Kaminsky of Savannah Galleries

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Kaminsky.

Hi Dan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As an extension of a collecting hobby I founded Savannah Galleries in 1968, making it the longest running antiques shop in Savannah, I am a native Savannahian living here all of my life except for a brief time in college when I attended Harvard University, George Washington University Law School and graduating from Emory University. My interest in fine antique furniture and rare oriental rugs formed the basis of my expertise prior to opening Savannah Galleries, which has expanded to include paintings, silver, and decorative accessories. In order to create a diverse collection, I have traveled extensively worldwide and have established an international network of contacts, providing access to estate and inventory liquidations for my museum and private clients.
I advise customers the appropriate selection for their room requirements, including scale, placement, and color coordination on all our antiques for sale.
I offer complete restoration services on oriental rugs, including reweaving and cleaning. I restore antique furniture, paintings, and picture frames, including gold leaf. My extensive contact network provides us with the ability to resolve a broad variety of restoration requirements.

My appraisal services on all antique items are available for insurance purposes or estate taxation.

I am available for lectures on furniture styles and construction, as well as oriental rug history, weaving techniques, and design.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The market has changed with the times. We can no longer just rely on walk-in customers so now we offer on-line sales with our own website and a presence on 1stdibs and Chairish. We ship antiques worldwide- including this year a pair of candelabra to Dubai and a large marble bust to Manilla, Philippines.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
10,000 square feet of fine American, English, and French antique furniture, paintings, silver, porcelains, antique and modern oriental carpets, chandeliers, and mirrors.

We offer design services for the novice or advanced collector. Oriental rug service includes cleaning and repairing. Estates purchased and appraisals performed.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Interested in history and art and loved fixing things- seeing how things worked.
