Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Peck.
Hi Shannon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Birthday parties are part of mother hood. I just took it a little further than most! I loved curating my kids celebrations and turning our dining room into an entire experience. After our fourth child was born I decided to leave the corporate life and open our shop!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a small business is like volunteering for a rollercoaster ride but with a blindfold. We have learned so much about so much. Things we didn’t know we needed to know. I thought I was going to hand balloons across the counter and call it a day. Learning to build the website, tax settings, label printers, you name it- we’ve learned what to do and not to do. Once we understood who we wanted to be as a brand and narrowed in on that, things ran much smoother.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our business has two sides: retail and custom balloons. Both give us the opportunity to interact and get to know our clients. I’ve done multiple birthday parties for kids that I did gender reveals for! Talk about a crazy full circle moment to have been a part of so many celebrations with one family. I think that’s the biggest thing that sets us apart from others; we really get to know our clients and design balloons that are truly custom to the individual or business. I started so tunnel visioned on birthdays that I never anticipated some of the tougher parts of life that deserve some fun even though they’re difficult. And we’ve done it all- memorials, hospice care (our secret weak spot), funerals, etc. The big bookings are great, but making kids smile that are going through a tough time is what I’m most proud of.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Some of my most beautiful work was done while I listened to Crime Junkie! But, I love the Bright Balloon podcast and follow some wonderful mentors online. The balloon world is full of classes on specific designs and continuing education. I spent seventeen years working on helicopters and business jets and do more classes now than I did then!
