Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Edwards.
Hi Becca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in the Lowcountry, I always felt a connection with nature and wellness (especially mental wellness). I earned a B.A. in Journalism (honors thesis was a film documentary about the education of handicapped children in rural Virginia) from Washington and Lee University and M.F.A. in Writing from SCAD (honors thesis was a book about modern teens and their stressors and coping mechanisms).
For over 25 years, I have also earned various certifications in such yoga modalities as Ashtanga, Integral, Prenatal, Postnatal, Thai and Restorative. I am also a certified holistic health coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, certified birth doula from DONA International, certified meditation instructor and certified trauma-informed yoga instructor from Yoga International, certified positive psychology practitioner from the School of Positive Transformation, and a certified mat Pilates and barre instructor.
Over the years, I have developed what I call a “kintsugi mindset” which is based on the Japanese art form in which damaged pottery is restored with gold lacquer to make it more valuable. This mindset began with nearly losing my third daughter, Camellia, during childbirth, which led me to become a birth doula and start a local program to certify more people in the area. And this mindset has continued throughout my breast cancer treatment and survivorship and is the reason I launched R.E.COVERY | curated healing and the Nirvana Network.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
What true journey is ever smooth? From 2020 to now I have experienced a series of really intense challenges with my health, my oldest daughter Ransom’s health, my mother’s recent breast cancer and now my father’s blindness and aphasia. I find I struggled most when I tried to evade dukkha (suffering), lost sight of the impermanent nature of life, and lived in the past with regrets and resentments while also living in the future with craving happiness. But when I am mindful, and admittedly this is not always easy, I have been able to be curious about the “un-smooth” patches in life. I try to follow a R.E.COVERY | curated healing acronym: A.I.M. = acknowledge (the challenge/hardship/suffering), investigate (how this challenge/hardship/suffering feels in my mind/body/spirit) and move through (not move on, but actually allow myself to evolve with this challenge/hardship/suffering).
Also, when I set out to create the Nirvana Network, there was this undercurrent that Eastern and Western philosophies could not plat well together. Also, some people come from a place of abundance, others from a place of scarcity. Dispelling preconceived notions at first can feel like you have to prove yourself and that can feel frustrating, forced and performative. However, once I quit trying so hard to communicate my vision, and just let the practitioners – of an array of ancient traditional and modern medicine modalities – naturally attract to the project and start taking initiative, the Nirvana Network began to work its magic. This lesson taught me, in short, to not freak out – meaning having patience and believing in something is way more powerful than trying to muscle your way through the mire.
We’ve been impressed with R.E.COVERY | curated healing + the Nirvana Network, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
R.E.COVERY | curated healing blends evidence-based practices with holistic and integrative therapies, supporting individuals across their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing journeys. Like the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi, R.E.COVERY | curated healing honors the beauty in our imperfections and provides compassionate and comprehensive services to guide individuals through their personal recovery and transformation.
4 Key Concepts of R.E.COVERY | curated healing:
1. Individuality: When it comes to healing, there is no one-size fits all. R.E.COVERY | curated healing provides a vetted collection of wellness-minded practices and modalities so you can explore what best helps you heal.
2. Trauma-informed: We are committed to fostering a safe, empowering space where healing is not about fixing what is broken, but about honoring what has been transformed to help each individual be golden, resilient and whole.
3. Impermanence: Whether we are talking about dukkha (suffering) or sukha (happiness), everything is impermanent. The happiness that you crave is just as fleeting as the suffering you may feel at any given time. We must let go of preconceived notions of “good” and “bad” and trust that, like the tide, what flows in will flow out.
4. Fear-free: It is my mission to take the fear out of healing.
I also created the Nirvana Network, which is the only network group in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area that integrates a combination of Eastern and Western philosophies, as well as ancient traditional and modern medicine modalities. It is a trusted group of carefully vetted wellness professionals dedicated to its mission: To create a collaborative wellness network to enhance access to comprehensive care and a full spectrum of wellness modalities, supporting individuals at every stage of their healing journey.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am a wife to a man who can name just about every body water and every plant on the globe. I am a mother of three very kind, dynamic, independent and innovative young women: Ransom (19), Ruth Love (17) and Camellia (15). I believe in all human rights and that people of opposing faiths, political views, you name it can learn from each other. We live on Calibogue Sound and rescue/foster wild and domestic animals. Right now we have four dogs, four cats, two bunnies, 20 chickens, three turkeys, and one raccoon. My intention in life is to spread compassion and kindness and my mission is to have a significant, lasting and positive impact on women’s health in particular. Quite often our symptoms are dismissed and there needs to be equity when it comes to medical research for women.
