Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Butcher.
Hi Jenny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to cosmetology school in 2000 without a plan—just a teen looking for an “easy” degree. I landed a job at a small salon in my hometown and, after some practice and more education, I found I loved doing hair. I enjoyed meeting people, making them feel good, and finishing each day satisfied. I worked in cosmetology for about a decade until a surprise divorce upended my life and the quiet path I’d expected.
With no pressure or direction, I realized I didn’t have to follow expectations anymore. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I wanted warmth, so I sold the house, packed what I could fit in my tiny pink Honda Del Sol, and headed south. I was headed to Florida, but I didn’t make it that far—when I turned onto 37th Street in Savannah, I felt at home for the first time in my life. I stayed with family while I transferred my license, looked for work, and found my footing in the service industry before becoming a receptionist at a tattoo studio.
I eventually became partners with one of the artists and we rebranded into The Butcher Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery, which I ran for over a decade. I met Lindsay Nix during that time; she encouraged me to return to hair, but I was busy running the shop. After the pandemic, we closed The Butcher in 2021 and I bounced between jobs—painting houses, executive assisting, etc.
Lindsay kept urging me back to cosmetology. Resistant at first—I hadn’t done hair in ten years—I joined as her assistant part-time. The first day back behind a chair, I realized how much I had missed this type of work. I’ve now been at Nix Studio for almost a year and have loved working with Lindsay and Kate, meeting people, building my books, and making new friends!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So many of the bumps I hit along the way boil down to my own insecurities
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
People
I am a people person.
I grew up in a community-minded family and area and so I was taught from a very young age to reach out to others, and that has served me very well; not just in the way that it gets me clients, but in the level of satisfaction I feel from my work.
From my perspective, I have a genuine curiosity and connection with each of my clients and who they are. While my technical skill ensure that my clients look great, my personal skill ensure that they are truly seen.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
When I was just starting out, I thought I had to have my entire life figured out in order to have a direction, a passion, a goal. I have found that’s not the case. Staying true to the parts of my life that bring me joy and fulfillment on the day-to-day had led me to a happiness and satisfaction that comes from having a true calling, not just a job or career.
