Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Hazlett of Ruby and Me Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Hazlett.

Hi Rachel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I think my love for the art of photography began when I was little and my fascination with taking pictures and videos of my family. My background is in Education as a teacher and a nanny so I had lots of opportunities to practice taking pictures of my nanny kids and their families. I guess you could say I am self-taught and didn’t really get serious about it until my early 30s. Coming from Florida, moving to Washington State, and now calling Savannah, GA my home has really broadened my horizon on my interaction with people and how taking pictures doesn’t have to be as awkward as some may think it is.

My approach is getting to know your story, how you met, why you moved to Georgia, or visiting what you love about the low country. Picking up the camera is more than just taking pictures. It’s telling a story without saying a word.

The beauty in each photo will speak for itself. I think what I love about being a photographer is connecting with each individual and being able to freeze time at that moment where years down the road you look at that picture and it brings you back and makes you relive that moment all over again.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, there were definitely challenges along the way but that’s all a part of the learning process, right? Trying to find ways to market yourself better and how to respond in a manner that keeps the clients coming back. The building that bond and trust is crucial!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ruby and Me Photography?
Ruby and Me Photography is based on my dog “Ruby” She literally goes with me anywhere I am able to take her. It got changed from “Rachel Noelle Photography” which is my first/middle name and just wasn’t sitting right with me. I wanted something where it could be a conversation starter and for all the dog mama and daddy’s out there I know you’d appreciate the name change!

Everybody calls me Ruby but when I tell them that’s my dog then it opens up a whole new can of worms. My style is warm and moody and I have created my own presets for my photos. I specialize in lifestyle, family, couple, maternity, and newborn photos. But my favorite would have to be maternity!

There’s just something so precious about a pregnant mama. I also do boudoir and branding sessions as well. I am always scouting out the area to find new locations for sessions to get my creative juices flowing!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that the options are endless on places to take photos. Whether it’s at beautiful Tybee beach or underneath the beautiful oak trees with hanging Spanish moss downtown. You can’t go wrong!

Summertime does get pretty crowded so that can be kind of frustrating when you want to get that perfect shot and there are people everywhere. But you just have to learn to be flexible
