Conversations with Mellisa Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mellisa Turner.

Hi Mellisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching and used to do commissioned work as a teenager. However, life got busy and my artwork got put to the side.

Then, with all of the Covid restrictions earlier this year and with some spare time on my hands I decided to begin drawing again. It’s just kind of taken off since then!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. I have battled with illness and struggles in my personal life which majorly impacted my journey.

However, all of these experiences really have just made me even more determined to succeed and have led me to where I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in drawing realistic portraits of humans and animals. I mostly use charcoal, pastels, and colored pencils.

I am most proud of my first commissioned piece, a portrait of a father and daughter. I like to build good, strong friendly working relationships with my clients to help me really capture their personality in my work.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I am a big advocate for mental health and well-being and some of these podcasts and apps have gotten me through some really tough times.

BetterHelp is a great online therapy service, even if you do not feel like you have any particular struggles, it’s always good to have someone there to talk to. 7 steps to manifesting your best life- it really is worthy of all of the hype!

Welcome home by Najwa Zebian or any of her books is beautifully written and super helpful to anyone recovering from trauma or abuse. Finally, the podcast Almost 30 is just a fun easy listen that covers a wide range of relatable topics.
