Daily Inspiration: Meet Eden Buchert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eden Buchert.

Hi Eden, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on the Outer Banks in North Carolina and I had 4 older siblings so my mom was always documenting everything. She always had a camera and used it to fill endless scrapbooks.

As a child, her camera fascinated me and I would play with it all the time. When I was ten, I graduated from using my mom’s camera and picked up my first point and shoot (which I still have today). I would use it to take portraits of my friends and anything else in my line of view.

In high school, I got a DSLR camera for my birthday. My teacher, Ms. Humphlett encouraged me to push myself and I went to school for photography at SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the most challenging part is trying to not compare myself to others.

It is so easy with social media at our fingertips to put yourself down because you are not doing something that you see your friend is doing.

When I realize I am comparing myself to others, I take a step back and remind myself that I am proud of where I am. The most important thing to me is to take care of my mental health.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer, and I specialize in portraits and lifestyle.

Growing up on the beach, I love watching my friends surf and hang out which is what inspired me to get into more lifestyle work. My good friend, Willy Holmes, started working where I was and I would meet up with him for sunrise surf sessions and that sparked my interest in surf photography.

My style comprises bright and vivid colors, mainly inspired by all the brightly painted beach cottages on the Outer Banks.

Any big plans?
I’m excited to graduate beginning of this summer.

After graduation, I plan to go back to where I am from to work and then in the fall take a big photo trip. Hopefully, my future will be filled with lots of traveling and people.

I grew up traveling so I have the travel bug and love exploring different parts of the world. You will definitely find me living near the beach. My dream is to live by the beach and photograph surfers around the world.
