Daily Inspiration: Meet Kimberly Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Austin.

Hi Kimberly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up doing beauty pageants and my dad had an in-home studio set up so I got a dose of photography very early on. Even throughout middle and high school, I’ve always had a camera in my hand. I was always the friend taking pictures with everyone because I knew one day, those pictures would be cherished memories.

I finally convinced my mom one day that I wanted a “big girl camera” and she agreed to go in half with me to purchase it. My mom always supported every spur-of-the-moment idea I had. I have always been dedicated to succeeding with whatever I set my mind to and I knew photography was going to be no different. I learned everything I could about my new camera and was taking pictures of everything that would slow down long enough to let me.

After graduating high school, I picked up the idea of professional photography and put it back down almost every year for the last decade. I just never could find the time to feed my passion for it. After losing my mom last year to leukemia, I realized that all of our memories were captured with my camera.

This gave me the push and reminded me how much I loved capturing those moments. I wanted to be able to connect with others and create beautiful images of people and their families to preserve their memories also. I started small as most photographers do. Offering discounted sessions and photographing any of my friends willing to help me grow my skill and my business.

The amount of love and support that I received helped me learn a lot about shooting and post-editing. It has been a blessing to grow as much as I have and I have loved every moment of it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The process has had its hurdles, but I’ve been lucky that none of them have been large enough to set me back. Anyone starting out trying to make a passion into a reality is going to face struggles.

I feel like I speak for most photographers when I say that self-doubt is one of the biggest hurdles to get over. It takes time to get past that initial fear of failure and feel confident in your work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I label myself as a photographer but I capture memories. I capture emotion and deliver images that will be cherished forever. My goal is for you to be able to look back 10-15 years at your pictures and be able to remember the way you felt at that very moment.

I am known for my bright and natural light photography. I love chasing the last light at the end of the day and using that soft golden sunlight to create a one-of-a-kind mood. I specialize in couples, maternity, seniors, families, and weddings. I’m most proud of how much my business has grown in such a short amount of time. I went from offering free sessions to having most of my afternoons and weekends filled with sessions and editing.

Something that sets me apart from others is I like to capture emotion. I’m not a photographer that will make you sit and pose in 50 awkward ways. I use prompts and little posing because I want to capture couples laughing and the love they have in their eyes when they look at each other.

I want to capture kids playing and running around and being themselves. Those are the things you will want to remember later in life.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My Mom. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She taught me growing up how to be strong, have thick skin, and do what made me happy. Any time I came to her for help, she stood behind me and pushed me. She kept me on track any time I got off balance and carried me every time I needed extra help.

She supported my love for photography since day 1 and I couldn’t have done it without her. Ever since I was a little girl she has always reminded me that she was my biggest fan and I carry that with me every day. My goal is to continue to make her proud.

Along this ride, I have also had an amazing boyfriend that is always there to help me at the drop of a hat. Whether it be setting up props, driving around to scout locations, or even taking my branding photos for me, he is always there. He is my rock through all of the highs and lows and for that, I am so blessed.

With those two people being my main supporters, I also have a huge group of friends, co-workers, and past clients that support me along the way.
