Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalen Thomas.
Hi Kalen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Surprisingly, I actually started my journey unexpectedly!
While I was in college, I would always find time and money to do my hair. Sometimes I would even be late to class trying to get the perfect hair color. In my senior year of college, I didn’t quite know what I wanted to do with my business degree but I knew I wanted to actually be in the business field; finance, marketing, accounting, etc.
I spent every weekend going back home to do hair as a side job, but I never thought about Pursuing it full time. One day I was researching hair vendors, then placed my first order for $70. Once I received the hair, I started marketing just those three bundles of hair and I received my first order. I used those funds to get more hair and that’s started my hair extensions business.
I graduated college in May of 2018, that first month I went through about five to six jobs looking for that perfect job that I could work my way up in. One day, I was at my last job and decided to leave early because I had a couple of clients looking to book. The next two days, I called out because I was getting more clientele, just in those two days! Before you knew it, it had been a month and I had been doing hair full time. I never looked back!
I marketed, budgeted, did the footwork, got frustrated, and did it all over again. About a year later, I went to cosmetology school and received my master’s cosmetologist license. Once I got licensed, I knew I had to level up in my business. I quit working from home and put my clients and myself in a nice salon suite, a very professional environment.
I’ve been able to add new services such as skincare and chemical services. I have even started selling my own formulated hair oil. It has been a struggle, but it’s only getting better. I’ve been in business for 4 years and it’s still the beginning!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
You will always have bumps in the road! Some of my personal struggles along the way would be finances and promotion.
Sometimes you can start to see all the money your business is bringing in and forget to put it back into your business. From small things such as having extra inventory to having extra marketing tools.
The reason I say promoting is that sometimes I can be booked for two weeks straight and easily forget to promote my business for those two weeks. So you just have to make sure you stay on top of every aspect!
As you know, we’re big fans of TheCosmoKay. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and I also offer raw and virgin hair extensions/wigs I sell my own all-natural hair oil. I specialize in weave and lace installs and also in natural hair, from relaxers to color! I would say I’m mostly known for lace installs and custom colors.
I think what sets me apart is the relationship I build with my clients. As soon as they sit in the chair it’s endless conversations. I’ve met people that have actually changed me in some sort, so just to know I’ve built that bond with my client makes me feel good in itself! I’m the proudest brand-wise that I’m able to travel with my brand. I have clients in different cities and they support me endlessly.
So the fact I have a brand that I can go anywhere with, I’m grateful for it! I just would like the readers to know whether you book me for your next wig install, your first facial, or even that color you’ve been wanting to get, you’re going to get more than a service.
You’re going to get a whole experience, from the relaxing shampoo to even a therapy session for you. As the young crowd says “it’s a vibe!”
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Traveling to Myrtle Beach every spring break with my family.
My mom and aunt would always work the Master’s Golf Tournament in Augusta then that Thursday to Sunday we would be in Myrtle Beach. My mom would always make sure I went to a crab leg buffet!
