Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawntay Gadson.
Hi Shawntay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the wonderful field of lactation after the birth of my second child. It was then I realized more women needed support and encouragement throughout their breastfeeding journeys. My journey wasn’t easy; I cried, laughed, and wanted to give up but ultimately, I was determined. I didn’t seek support because I didn’t know anyone who had breastfed or who was in the community giving support.
I knew then I wanted to change the narrative. I dove headfirst on the journey to becoming an IBCLC. I have worked in hospital settings and currently have a private practice located in Savannah, Ga, and virtually worldwide. I have to say I may be biased, but this is the greatest career one could ever have.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to becoming an IBCLC was not easy but it’s worth it. Finding ways to get clinical hours and the fees associated with becoming an IBCLC can be very challenging. Furthermore, opening a private practice can be scary but I am reminded of what a friend once told me, “Do it scared.”
This means yes, it’s scary and challenging but you can do anything you put your mind to. Finding a location, getting all the materials, and making sure the business is running smoothly can definitely be challenging. The “what ifs” associated with starting something new can also be challenging. So here I am, doing it scared. For this very reason, I offer clinical hours and education to those who are interested in becoming an IBCLC.
We’ve been impressed with Glow Lactation, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I am most proud of working with the reach (racial and ethnic approaches to community health) grant alongside Healthy Savannah to help increase black breastfeeding rates in Chatham County. I am looking forward to continuing to educate and support the community in all efforts to increase breastfeeding rates.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had a big personality and loved to entertain the crowd. I was a cheerleader in HS and in college. I loved to dance and sing but for some odd reason, most people would tell me not to sing.
