Meet Abby Mew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Mew.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was working as a Conference Services Manager at a downtown Savannah full-service hotel when Covid hit. One day we were hearing about Covid for the 1st time. The next day, we were all being laid off.

The hospitality industry was hit hard, suffering losses of millions of dollars in revenue in a single day due to all of the cancellations of events and travel. After some time off, I started working from home in customer service for a well-known web-based retailer (whose claim to fame is 2-day shipping).

After being stuck in the house all day and spending 8 hours a day on the phone, I needed a creative outlet. One day, I was perusing Etsy, looking for a door hanger for my front door. I found one I liked and thought to myself. “I can make this myself.” Then I thought, this can be my creative outlet!

I posted on Facebook the next day, asking if any of my friends would be interested in purchasing a door hanger if I made them. Eight friends placed orders that day. That was in September 2020. We started with fall and Christmas themes, with Scottie cutting all of the shapes. I either stained or painted the wood. Some were only painted, while others had vinyl wording and greenery and bows.

Since then, we’ve created hundreds of door hangers, all cut by hand, not a laser, in our garage. We’ve also made noodle boards, cowboy hat racks, dog leash holders, nursery signs, wooden ornaments, and porch leaners. I’ve also started making earrings and rearview mirror car charms.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been an adventure, to say the least.

We’ve waded through finding the best wood to use to create a smooth, lightweight door hanger, which paint has the best coverage, which vendors have the largest selection of ribbon and greenery, and which sealant provides the best protection.

I’m very detail-oriented and quite the perfectionist, so the little stuff matters. It’s important that we deliver a quality product, something we are proud to put our name on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We craft handmade door hangers, nursery signs, and other wooden items. We are known for our variety of door hangers.

We offer 18” round door hangers, as well as specialty shapes, all of which are hand cut, sanded, stained, and painted. Unlike some other companies, we don’t use a laser and we seal all of the signs to protect them from the sun and weather.

Our most popular door hanger is an 18” stained round that says “Welcome to our home,” but we love to create shapes and custom orders.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
You can find our products at Horton’s General Store in Rincon, GA.
