Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Suppes and Hannah Agueci.
Hi Cassie and Hannah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, Cassie here. I was born in Colorado to a mathematical father and an artistic mother. Through photography, I found a comfortable blend of those two mindsets. It is a form of creation that combines artistic technique and practical challenges. When I was 15, I noticed a lot of people at school couldn’t afford their senior photos. In response, I started a small photo company that grew and developed beyond taking senior photos to include family photos, engagements, and weddings. I believe everyone should have access to quality photography without having to break the bank. I decided to pursue schooling to further my career and earned a photography degree from Savannah College of Art and Design.
Hi, Hannah here. I was born and raised in the New York metropolitan area on Long Island. I grew up surrounded by all types of art and creativity. My mom began her career as a creative arts therapist and later managed a ceramics studio and owned her own business designing and teaching jewelry making. My dad has a keen interest in photography and gets creative in the kitchen! As a student, I struggled with math and science, but always understood the lessons best when I could turn them into art projects. I discovered my talent for photography at age 15. As a high school student, I was hired as a photographer by an entertainment company that supplied photo booths, green screens, games, etc., for large parties and corporate events. Through that job, I honed my photography skills and learned a lot about working with families. Recognizing that I had a talent and could make photography a career with potential for success inspired me to consider higher education in a creative arts school. I was accepted early decision to the photography program at SCAD, where I fell in love with this art form even more than I could have imagined.
We met by studying abroad in France in the spring of 2019. Back at SCAD, our friendship continued to grow during our senior year and, becoming closer and closer every day, we decided to turn Cassie’s photo business into our business. Our first wedding together in 2020 solidified that we were a strong partnership with the potential to grow into something amazing. Of course, it was not as simple as that! Right after graduating, Cassie accepted a full-time job as a senior photographer for an advertising company and moved back to Colorado. We decided to make Simple Moments a two-location business. We already shared a love for traveling – so why not build travel into our work as well? The Savannah office is run by Hannah and Cassie heads up our Colorado location.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We started our company in the middle of a pandemic so of course, we struggled, even more so because of the condition of the world. We weren’t sure what would become of Simple Moments. In order for us to photograph weddings, people need to have a wedding – and in 2020, big events of any kind were few and far between. We couldn’t make a living on just a few weddings a year so we expanded to shoot family portraits, graduations, birthday parties, engagements, and a lot of elopements. It wasn’t until this year that people started to have big wedding events again. As people start to come out of their shells a little bit more, we expect to see a lot of growth in our business. Like all start-ups, we had our growing pains. We tackled the typical little details such as “how do we want our Instagram to look?” “What do we write in our contract?” “Did we set up a business email yet?” We answered questions, resolved issues, and tied up loose ends through communication and lots and lots of phone calls.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
If we had to pick a title, we are a wedding photography company – but we love everything that has to do with photo creation. We do lots of engagements and family photoshoots in addition to weddings and love capturing it all. We are known for being super accessible to clients, for being very understanding, for being all-in for anything, and for being genuine people. I think that is what sets us apart. We are as authentic as we possibly can be. We treat clients like family and friends and look at shoots as not just a “job,” but a chance to connect and create. We are most proud that we have stayed true to ourselves through all of this. We are very excited about everything that is to come for us and our company.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Even though we are a team we don’t work together often. We work a lot of our jobs alone and end up staring at a computer for long periods of time, so we rely on podcasts or music to help us stay focused and feel less alone in the process. We connect with and are inspired by other creatives on social media. Simple Moments primarily uses Instagram and we are growing our presence on Facebook and TikTok.
