Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Legare.
Hi Helen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We are a family farm that has been operating on John’s Island since 1725. We raise beef cattle, pork, lamb, and vegetables. We have a very active and busy agri-tourism side to our business, which includes, but not limited to a pumpkin patch in October, summer camp, birthday parties, and many other activities. The farm is run by the ninth generation of the Lagare family.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Farming is never smooth and there’s always ups and downs. Our operation has changed over the years and most recently we changed from raising turf grass and a plant nursery and went back to vegetables and beef cattle. We added the Agritourism side to our farm, which has been a great addition.
As you know, we’re big fans of Legare Farms. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We have a couple of buses that travel around the Charleston area doing mobile farmers markets. We set up at businesses and neighborhoods. We sell vegetables, meat, eggs, honey, jar products, pecans, baked goods and much more. We host a Pumpkin Patch in October. We are open for the public on weekends and school field trips on weekdays. We also do many other farm themed field trips year round. We host birthday parties. We have done a Helicopter Egg Drop for the past two years. We are well known for our hayride to feed the cows.
How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure I believe in luck either good or bad. We’ve had some great opportunities that we’ve been able to take advantage of but also had some terrible breaks too.
