Check Out Abby Barnhart’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Barnhart.

Hi Abby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My small business journey started in 2019 in North Carolina. My husband was off training, and being a new military spouse, I wanted to find something to keep me busy while he was away for months at a time. That’s when I found what started my business off: macrame! Over the past couple of years, my business has evolved into different forms of art. That brings us to today where I now make sustainable cement homewares and soon, leather accessories for people and their pets!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a small business is not easy. People don’t realize how much work goes into it. Aside from actually creating my products, I had to learn how to take good product photos, how to market to my audience, how to do business taxes, and more. It’s very overwhelming at times, especially when you put so much time and work into it and it doesn’t pay off in sales. But sometimes you get a 5-star review or an email from a customer telling you how much they love your product, and that’s what makes all the time and energy worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create sustainable gifts for you and your pets that will last a lifetime. I specialize in making homewares out of cement in different designs and styles like terrazzo or marble effects. I have also started doing some leatherwork and I am excited to introduce more leather products in the way of accessories, jewelry, and pet products! I am most proud of my leather wine glass markers, a product I was not 100% sure of at first, but now is my bestseller!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
My favorite part about Savannah is the creative community! The support from other artists is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. My least favorite part about Savannah is the creepy crawlies! Being from up north, we don’t have bugs like they do here in the south!
