Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Bolduc.
Hi Britt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been creating art ever since I can remember, as a little kid. I heavily picked up an interest in it in high school and went on the complete a BFA at the University of Hartford. I graduated in 2014 and began a tattoo apprenticeship, which I completed in a year and a half. My career really took off from there. I tattooed full time until 2020 and now I am focusing more on painting and murals. I had dabbled in both since high school, but have made it more of a focus recently as I enjoy painting more than anything. I also create my own apparel designs which I’m hoping to continue to grow in my online store over the years. I look forward to seeing how my career in art evolves and adapts as I myself grow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A career in arts is rarely smooth and immediately successful in my opinion. I had a lot of people judge or try to convince me to go on a different path, before and during my college years. I was constantly told that art just wouldn’t be a lucrative path and I would always struggle. I am definitely a doer and up for a challenge, so I honestly used those judgments to fuel my fire even more. I ended up being monetarily more successful than most of my family before 30. Not that I define success by money or salary anymore, but it just goes to show the biggest limitations we have in life are the ones we accept; whether or not they’re the reality of our circumstances or the opportunity around us. Training and challenging my mind has been the biggest component of any successes I’ve had in my life thus far. It’s all too easy to fall into the limitations we set for ourselves, or become complacent to the narratives of the people we grow up around. The past year has been another cycle of challenges as I place tattooing on the back burner and really try and evolve my life around painting. But I know nothing worthwhile is easy, and I have an unbelievable support system to take a chance on such a dramatic change.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I truly feel like I’m such a diverse artist. I remember in college teachers would always try to gear us into one style our senior year. That way we would stand out or be known for that specific niche. Which I don’t disagree with, but for me, it definitely is against my nature and stunts my creativity. I’ve learned to flow where my energy and desires go. So if that means working on a large loose portrait painting, or colored pencil on wood, or maybe even digital work on my iPad, then I will do what I feel called to. I think with art its important to learn the “rules”, or better yet the foundations (composition, values, color theory, perspective, etc), and then break them as you see fit. Life is boring staying in your comfort zone anyway.
I’d say I’m known for my portrait work, whether it was my tattoos or paintings. My somewhat crude or sex positive drawings, and my attention to detail.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I love these types of questions. I am such a planner and have been pushing myself over the past few years to make a plan that is much looser than I normally make, and allow that to change and alter if my vision or goals change. I think I’m going through my biggest shift this year, so I can’t say that something more dramatic will shift for me in the coming year or so, but I’m truly open to whatever opportunities come my way. I only know what I’ve experienced, so I never want to close doors or be dead set in my ways about my path when something else could be even more fulfilling to me. As of now, I can see my online store booming, as I’ve been putting a lot of effort into laying down that foundation and getting ready to launch it. I’m hoping that the mural business continues to grow for me, as well as my original paintings on canvas. I’m currently working on an astrology series that I’m really excited to put out to the public. I’ve also been getting a lot of joy out of doing larger paintings of tattooed women of various backgrounds.
