Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Chase
Hi Brooke, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, I suppose my story started as a little kid. My earliest memories of environmental advocacy started in 1st grade. My folder was covered in Captain Planet and save the ocean stickers. I remember being at a baseball game at about 11 years old and seeing someone litter, in real life, for the 1st time. I walked up to the man and strongly suggested that this he must have “accidentally dropped” his hot dog wrapper on the ground and showed him where the nearest trash can was. In 4th grade, there was a big oil spill and I remember crying about the animals and then did a project in science class about how to clean it up. Unfortunately, life didn’t encourage me to believe that I could be a scientist- there wasn’t much of the Women in STEM as there is now although I wanted to be a marine biologist as a kid. But, with a love for telling stories and writing I studied broadcast and journalism hoping to expose wrong environmental doings in that way. Fast forward about 20 years I had many jobs in marketing, radio and promotions that required plenty of event planning. I saw such waste in anything that required the gathering of even just a few people from single use plastics, to food waste and party favors littering the ground… I saw a huge opportunity to make a difference without sacrificing fun and so my company: Simply B. Social was born. I strive to look at events big or small through what I call green goggles, instead of rose colored glasses. I can elevate the whole experience through engaging and memorable ways that create more fun, less waste! Today, I am becoming as involved in the communicate as I can. I am working to bring back Green Drinks with others, supporting local sustainable businesses, I have a podcast, a blog, a sustainable business myself and I try to help educate people with simple and fun ways they can do their part …bc alone we do a little but together we simply do more!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am struggling to get the word out about my business and find a niche between people with a budget, who care about the environment but who are not already doing the work… it’s not been the easiest service to promote. But I know this is the right now and I so excited about the opportunities that are about to happen!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love people, I love meeting new people and I Iove telling stories. Sharing personal stories about myself and bringing a level of humor to our daily lives is probably why everyone would agree I specialize in no matter what job I’ve had. I’ve been an admissions rep, been in radio for years, run a social media company, been a consultant, a photographer, been in sales, a waitress, a hostess, a cook – I have had a lot of different jobs. But I’ve always given them my all, and I’ve always enjoyed being personable and creating relationships with those I meet each day. We can all relate to emotion, and struggles and doing the best we can. Whether it’s the lessons hard times have taught us or how they brought us to another path we all can agree that the stories of our lives can bring us together. I think this is what sets me apart. I am known to work hard and just about always with a smile on my face. Right now, I am waitressing to make ends meet, cleaning houses, helping people register to vote, volunteering and training to sell ads on social media PLUS starting my business. Sometimes people ask me what I’m doing waitressing with so much to offer but honestly I have had the title and the job and I’ve had the job without the title and I’ve had the money but it’s really all relative. I left all of that and moved here a year ago in pursuit of doing my part to save the planet. I never thought I’d be mopping the floor but when I think about being able to do all of that, while living in my favorite place, while making others smile will surely make me do the same.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory. Sheesh this is a tough one. Probably playing with the neighborhood kids outside playing make believe land of the lost in the summers. We had some wild imaginations. We would play sun up to sun down and came home only to eat or go to bed before we got in trouble. those were the good old days. I loved playing in the basement with my cousins too. We would play radio station and sing into flashlights all night long.
