Today we’d like to introduce you to Dierra Jones.
Hi Dierra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Dierra Jones Studio began in 2018 while I was a graduate student attending Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). During this time in my artistic career, I had no pursuit of creating a business for myself because my only goal was to develop a website for my portfolio work/course. I did not see my full potential until October 2018, when I attended my first show, which was the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.
Though I was honored to attend several nationally known shows throughout that timeframe, I still however struggled with finding my own voice. Today, I am proud of who I am as a jewelry artist because I know that my voice lives through my work. I believe that no matter what someone may think or how you feel at the moment, you should just go for it!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe whenever you’re trying to establish or build something, the road is never easy. A challenge that I’ve faced as an artist, was knowing the value of my work. As a jewelry artist, I would often hear people say, “you can’t price this necklace or those pair of earrings at $___________ (cost) because you used _____________ (materials).”
I personally believe that the value of any artwork, like jewelry is given by the artist or the person who is receiving it. Along with this, another struggle that I face as an artist/business owner is making time for each gift that I hold, especially since I am both an artist and a K-5 Visual Arts teacher. Although I consider this to be a challenge, I believe that it is a good one to have!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a creative, I absolutely love to experiment! I don’t ever want to become comfortable with using one material because there is so much to offer when you brainstorm and dig deeper! When I think about jewelry, I see an endless list of possibilities. Of course, jewelry can be your typical ring, necklace, or a pair of earrings made from a precious material, but it can also be something sculpted completely out of paper or junk lying throughout your house.
As a jewelry artist, I specialize in alternative materials, like ceramic, wood, concrete, and other materials to tell a story. These materials then question the idea of value. Along with this, I also specialize in enameling as well as bead and wire techniques, where I draw inspiration from everyday life and color.
My ability to explore and produce both conceptual art and everyday wear jewelry allows my work to stand out from others.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As an artist, a few characteristics that are attributed to my success is the distinctiveness and the quality of my work. I believe that anyone can make something, but the thing that sets you apart is what you deliver and how you deliver it.
I believe that all ideas should have a story and a well-written plan, thus allowing them to be successful!
