Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Edwards
Hi Evan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in art began in 7th grade when my art teacher noticed something unique about my work—something I had taught myself. Their encouragement made me realize I had a talent worth pursuing, and from that moment, I started taking art seriously. Through middle and high school, I immersed myself in art, taking every class available and knowing it was my passion.
When it came time for college, I only applied to art schools, with SCAD being one of them. I first heard about SCAD when a high school alum visited my art class to share their experience there. However, it wasn’t until I visited the Savannah campus that I knew SCAD was the right place for me. Looking back, it’s a decision I’ll never regret.
As a teenager, I explored different paths within art. Animation intrigued me until I realized the level of dedication (and sleepless nights!) it required—kudos to animation majors. Graphic design followed, but it didn’t quite match my love for drawing. Eventually, I found my passion in illustration.
My artistic style and focus have evolved over time, and I expect it will continue to do so. Currently, my work centers around pet and animal-related illustrations, a niche I truly enjoy and see myself growing further into.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is imposter syndrome—a challenge I know many creatives can relate to. Despite the progress I’ve made and the positive feedback I’ve received, there are moments when self-doubt creeps in, making me question whether my work is truly good enough.
Over time, I’ve learned to manage my feelings by focusing on my personal growth rather than comparing my work to that of my peers, whom I admire greatly. Everyone has a different journey and I remind myself of the reasons I started creating in the first place. It’s a continuous voyage, but each step forward helps build my confidence and reaffirms my passion for what I do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in drawing animals, with a particular love for capturing the personality and essence of dogs. I’m best known for my black-and-white pet portraits, which make timeless and heartfelt gifts—perfect for someone who cherishes their pet as much as (or maybe more than) anything else.
One of my proudest achievements came with advice from SCAD alum Blythe Leonard. I painted and developed a series of notecards featuring America’s top-loved dogs, which are now sold in shopSCAD and a few stores in my home state of North Carolina.
What sets my work apart is the unique style of my portraits. Using ink and gum arabic, I create pieces with a glowing quality that’s hard to replicate with traditional pencils or paints. It’s a niche approach, but one that brings my subjects to life in a special way.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is this: it gets easier, and you will create things you’re proud of! One thing I worried about—and still sometimes do—is not having a specific, recognizable style. But I’ve learned that this is just part of the natural evolution that happens as you grow and become more comfortable with your work.
Give yourself permission to experiment, explore, and not have all the answers right away. Your style will develop over time, and the process of finding it is just as important as the destination. Be patient with yourself, and trust in your growth.
