Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Covington.
Jason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked with a guy while I was active-duty Navy that was a Tattoo Artist. He taught me a little here and there. He was getting ready to change command and was heading overseas. Said that he couldn’t take his tattoo equipment with him and gifted it all to me. That was 2002. 21 years later, I’ve tattooed in London and Sicily, owned my own shop in the Florida Keys. Now I’m here at Liberty Tattoo Co. in Hinesville.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not having a traditional apprenticeship was the biggest challenge. There was no YouTube or google when I started. So, I did bad, inexperienced tattoos on my homies. After a few years of that. I got better. Then I met this guy. He kinda took me under his wing. A great friend of mine. He taught me some tricks. Some better, less traumatizing techniques. I’ve pretty much owe where I’m at now to him. R.I.P. Justyn Carr.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Working in street shops my entire career, I can do pretty much any style of tattoo. I don’t do realism too often, so I’m not versed in that as much as other styles. I specialize in Traditional Tattoos. I don’t think I’m set apart from anyone else. To be honest, I still feel like I’m playing catch-up after 20 years.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think it’s going to get better. Technology is a driving force in every industry. The tools are getting better; the pigments are getting better. I believe we are headed in the right direction. I’m old school still. I’ve used pens and rotaries, but nothing beats the sound of a Coil Machine running. The weight of stainless. It’s what I know.
