Check Out Jemina Mensah’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemina Mensah

Hi Jemina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Ga. Savannah has become my temporary home because of SCAD. Music and dance have always been an integral part of my life. My mother was a dancer in the Ghana Cultural Ballet. It all started there for me. Anything art related from kindergarten to now, I try to do. I make music, I dance, take picture, etc. All art is my love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing my passion has not been easy at all. People don’t value art like they should. You end up getting a lot of people to steer you away from anything art related as a career. I been pulled out of chorus classes for the sake of being something considered “valuable”. Things like being a doctor or a lawyer. I struggled with the confidence aspect to because of this. I had moments where I felt like I was wasting my time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself an artist in all aspects. I produce music, dance, sing, photography, dj etc. I love to try and do it all. I’m proud of expressing myself through theses mediums and using them to inspire and make people happy. I feel like I have a unique view of what I do. I want my work to transcend just myself. I want to constantly tell stories and bring people together through it. The passion, drive, and determination put into my work will always show for itself.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mom and uncle have been my main inspiration. My mother was a cultural dancer, and my uncle is a DJ. Being surrounded by the music they play and the things they do, I absorbed it all. But the credit to the success that is brewing goes to the lovely people I met coming to Savannah. I joined SCAD”s Afrobeat dance team and met people that pushed me to be a better performer and actually dive into my talents. The many growing artist I’ve met here giving me a chance to work with them. They all played a big part in this.
