Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Licht.
Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out as a kid who drew all the tome and took art once a week with an artist who lived down the street from me.
I studied printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts in Philadelphia .
After finishing school i moved to NY city where i got fired from several jobs . I found new work as a street artist in Soho nyc where i sold my art to people from around the world . While doing that i was able to get freelance gigs at the New Yorker and other publications . I was a street artist and free lance artist in nyc for 10 years until i got married to another artist and had three kids. Needless to say that didn’t work out and i moved to Savannah with my kids. As my kids got bigger i begam to be a full time artist and began supporting my small family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy road as a single mom and an artist . I had to take several unsatisfying jobs to earn a few bucks in between trying to maintain my creative side ..
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started getting noticed in Savannah during Covid for my pet portraits which gave me more freedom to show my other work which included fight scenes at the waffle house and other local spots that all savannah locals see everyday . I have paintings of the globe , Larry’s when it still existed, the flag man, who sadly passed away , carrey hilliards , Randy’s bbq , paintings of waiters at Denny’s and the workers at the breakfast place on victory drive . I also do a-lot of human portrait’s. In the past i did sculpture incorporating see glass i found in the marshes and hand fired mosaics amd tiles. I also currently do block prints amd hand printed t’s incorporating local scenes and ufo’s
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Connecting with people through my art.
And painting image’s that everyone can relate to.
