Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Sue DeLoach Smith.
Hi Mary Sue DeLoach, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2015 I began to restore the authentic “mule barn” built in 1914 by my Granddaddy. The Barn at Olde Homeplace was used for animals’ shelter when mules did the work on farms (before tractors.)
The tin roof was in bad shape and that was the first step in preserving the structure. Then the idea came to add restrooms so that my children could have a place for hosting suppers, etc.
A neighbor inquired if she could use the barn for an engagement party and from there word of mouth has led to a venue on the rural Westside, 6 miles from Statesboro.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Idea after idea would come as the process unfolded. The “lean to” which was added in 1920 was enclosed for warmth and security.
Concrete floors were also added for safety and ease of walking, Additional power was added.
Repurposing of feed rooms for a “caterer’s kitchen, storage room, bride’s room and groom’s dressing room. The horse stalls area was converted to a bar for alcohol, tea, lemonade, coffee, etc.
Gas heaters and fans have been added. But since it’s a rustic venue, it is not rented from mid-December until March 1 and also not in July and August because of unpredictable weather.
Through each change the character of the barn has remained. Many farm related artifacts are seen throughout the venue. The renter is free to choose their food, decorator, etc.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a retired school teacher after serving 50 years in a career I enjoyed immensely. Along the way my late husband and I raised our family consisting of three children and I secured advanced degrees at Georgia Southern graduating with my doctorate in Curriculum in 1999.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
In both my professional career and in starting a venue, enjoying working with people has been vital to success as well as staying open to new trends and listening to what people want. It goes without saying hard work is necessary and I do enjoy working. I like to see progress happen and changes made that are beneficial.
I’ve also enjoyed seeing people put their ideas in place and using my Venue to make their dreams come to life for an event
