Check Out Scott Grove’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Grove.

Scott Grove

Hi Scott, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was young, art was always something I was interested in. I’m originally from Pensacola Florida, I found a passion for costume design in my local high school’s theatre program. Through that connection, I came to SCAD looking towards fashion design, but found myself pulled towards a different path. Everything I loved about fashion and costume were the little details that made the piece – the pattern, the texture, the fabric. I immediately fell in love with the Fibers program, a place that combined drawing for print and pattern with more structural technqiues such as weaving, as well as decorative embellishment. Through SCAD, I’ve been able to refine the skills I’ve been interested in, and can’t wait to enter my senior year this fall.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up with an interest in art, I always felt like I wasn’t drawing, painting, sewing, creating the “right way”. It took me a while to really embrace art and commit to attending SCAD and pursuing a creative career because I was afraid that I would get here and immediately fall short amongst students with much more technical training and skill. However, once I got here, I realized the drawing technique that came natural to me, the textural, expressive quality I tried to correct and undo, is what my peers and professors found interesting and unique. Now I fully have leaned into that, and I’m so thankful to have a community of people to show me the way I work is good enough, if not even more special.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a textile designer – I create various types of fabrics and textiles from various techniques – specifically, print and pattern, woven fabrics and various textile manipulations. I use the natural world that I have explored my whole life as inspiration, and create pieces inspired by the organic textures and patterns of our planet earth. My end use for these textiles are residential, contract and hopsitality spaces; from home to hotels, I hope to create textiles that live with the space, and bring a sense of relaxation and calm with my organic-feeling textiles.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone starting out in a creative field, or anything, is to put yourself out there as much as you can. Yes, it can be scary, but applying yourself outside of your comfort zone, whether from exhibitions to competitions to scholarships, will help you grow yourself as an artist or designer. I have been very fortunate to have been awarded several scholarships and competitions, from the 2024 ICFA Richard Frinier Scholarship to 2nd Place in The Durkan DSCVR Competition, and find myself currently as an intern for the summer in Charlotte North Carolina for Wesley Mancini LTD. None of these opportunites would have came to me unless I pursued them, and put in the hours to get better at what I do. And in that as well – believe in yourself and keep going no matter where you’re starting. You will make plenty of mistakes and errors, but you will learn from them, or in my case, embrace them as the things that make you special.
