Community Highlights: Meet Bradley Sutton of Oakie’s Deli and Delights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Sutton

Hi Bradley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our journey started with Bradley, who has been immersed in the restaurant industry since he was a kid. His parents, Lynn and Gus Cowart, are well-known in the Tybee community for their cooking, management of multiple restaurants, and even catering services. They passed down their skills and love for food to Bradley, who has honed these talents over the years. Bradley has also spent the past several years working at Sundae Cafe, where he gained valuable experience and mentorship from AJ, the owner.

Bradley’s dream of owning his own restaurant grew even stronger when he and his partner, Kayla, welcomed their daughter Oakley into the world -They were determined to bring this dream to life. Oakley is the inspiration behind Oakies Deli and Delights. They wanted to show her that with hard work and dedication, you can do anything you set your mind to.

We wanted Oakies to be more than just a deli and bakery; we want it to be a place where our community can come together to enjoy our love for food. The name is a tribute to our family and our desire to create a welcoming, family-oriented space. We strive to provide an atmosphere where everyone feels at home. We are grateful for the support of our Tybee community and look forward to serving delicious meals and creating lasting memories for years to come!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been mostly smooth, but we did face a few struggles. We’re still learning how to juggle full-time jobs, running a business, raising our daughter, and finding family time. We’re incredibly thankful for our close family who have been our support system. We also had to revamp the whole building to match our aesthetic and navigate the process of getting the correct licenses, which pushed our opening day back more than we expected. Despite these challenges, we knew our Tybee community would support us whether we opened sooner or later, and for that we are forever grateful!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Oakie’s Deli and Delights is a family-owned and family-oriented business. We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel like part of our family. We specialize in sandwiches, desserts, coffee, pastries, baked goods, hot plates, and catering services. Our goal is to bring a taste of home to every bite, and we take pride in everything we make. And of course to spread Peace, Love, Tybee to everyone who walks through our doors!

What sets us apart is our commitment to quality and community. We use fresh, locally sourced ingredients to ensure that every dish is not only tasty but also supports local producers. Our team is passionate about creating a warm and friendly atmosphere where everyone feels like family.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the fact that our business was inspired by our daughter Oakley. You can always expect a meal made with love and a smile. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or catering a special event, we’ve got you covered with our delightful offerings and services.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played a significant role in our life and business, both good and bad. We’ve faced challenges that seemed like bad luck, but they often led us to new opportunities and growth. For instance, starting Oakies Deli and Delights was a leap of faith, and we encountered unexpected hurdles along the way. However, those moments of bad luck taught us resilience and adaptability.

On the flip side, we’ve also experienced good luck, like finding the perfect location for our deli and connecting with amazing local suppliers. A particularly fortunate event was when AJ, the owner of Sundae Cafe, took Bradley under his wing. AJ has given Bradley invaluable business advice and support and has been someone Bradley looks up to, not just in business but in his personal life as well. AJ has watched Bradley grow up, and his mentorship has been a blessing.

Even through the hurdles that pushed our opening day back, our Tybee community always stood by our side and gave us the support we needed to continue to push through the bad times. Their unwavering support has been a key factor in our success. Overall, luck has been a mix of challenges and blessings that have shaped who we are today.
