Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Khan
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts with my parents, who migrated to the U.S. in pursuit of the American dream. A true story about a family starting from the bottom and now we’re here, haha. My dad drove a taxi, and my mom worked in a doctor’s office while trying to build a life for our family. I was born and raised in Chicago, but our journey took us to St. Louis, where we first stepped into the jewelry business—starting from a flea market stand and eventually growing into a kiosk in the mall.
Like any family, we faced struggles, but my parents never let us feel the weight of them. Their resilience shaped me. We later moved to Maryland, where we built a new chapter in our jewelry journey. The recession hit us hard, but we pushed through, eventually opening multiple locations in numerous malls under the name Monica Jewelers—after me, of course.
Jewelry and Business has always been in my blood. I fully immersed myself in the family business, carving out my own space within it. At just 13 years old, I started attending trade shows, something I’ve continued to do every few months ever since. But breaking through in this industry wasn’t easy—especially as a woman. Jewelry has always been a male-dominated business, and I had to fight to prove myself. I faced constant doubt, bad-mouthing, and even hate from those who couldn’t accept that a female jeweler could be just as knowledgeable and successful—if not more—than her male counterparts. But I refused to let that define me. Instead, I used my experience, skills, and drive to build a strong team and solidify my place in this industry.
Then life took another turn—my brother moved to Houston to open a store there, while I held down the Maryland location as my own. It was at a trade show that I met my now-husband Ali, who, fittingly, is also in the jewelry business. As our relationship grew, I found myself visiting Savannah more often, and eventually, he asked me to marry him. That’s when I made the big move, leaving behind my “first baby” in Maryland to start a new chapter in Savannah.
Now, my husband Ali and I own Crescent Jewelers at Oglethorpe Mall. While I’ll always have a deep connection to my roots and the store I built back home, this new journey with Crescent Jewelers and my forever partner is just the beginning of something even greater. My success as a female jeweler is proof that this industry isn’t just for men—it’s for anyone willing to put in the work, overcome the obstacles, and create something truly special.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was starting over in a new city—building a new team, earning trust, and finding my place, not just in business but also in my new roles as a wife and daughter-in-law. I went from being well-established to having to prove myself all over again, which was both humbling and motivating.
Beyond that, being a female jeweler in a male-dominated industry has always come with its battles. I’ve faced doubt, criticism, and people who didn’t want to see me succeed. But I’ve never let that define me. Instead, I’ve used those challenges to push harder, build stronger, and create something truly my own.
The road hasn’t been easy, but every struggle has shaped me into the leader I am today.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
With over 20 years of experience in the jewelry industry, I’ve learned that success comes from always being willing to learn and take criticism. No matter how much experience you have, there’s always room for growth.
When it comes to finding a mentor or networking, the key is to surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you. I’ve built valuable relationships by attending trade shows, engaging with industry leaders, and staying open to advice—both good and bad. The best lessons often come from tough criticism, and I’ve never been afraid to use it as motivation to improve.
Networking isn’t just about making connections; it’s about building real relationships. Be open, ask questions, and never stop learning. The right people will recognize your passion and help you grow.
