Community Highlights: Meet Myron Weldon Jr. of True Potential Barbering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myron Weldon Jr.

Myron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After high school, I planned on joining the Navy to become a Hospital Corpsman, (a medic), with plans to study radiology when I got out of the military. That plan failed after about two weeks of boot camp because the Navy didn’t allow me to further my training with my sickle cell condition.

Upon coming back home to Savannah, I worked a few jobs until I decided to go to school to be an aircraft electrician. My father was a helicopter mechanic in the army, so he convinced me to go this route for security and pay. I did this for about 7 to 8 years, and during that whole time, after looking back at it, I realized that barbering had a hold on me. I was fascinated with the art of barbering. Every time I went to the barbershop I was amazed and interested in the shop atmosphere, and the barber’s way of doing their jobs. I found myself lining my facial hair, keeping myself tight in between shop visits, then eventually did a few cuts on some associates. I really enjoyed it! Being an aircraft electrician was unfulfilling. I was unsatisfied and grew bored with my career in aviation.

I tried to change the pace and environment by going on contract so that I can visit different places and work with different companies. After about a year of contract work in aviation, I was growing more intolerant of my work choice, leading me to enroll in barber school. I had studied for about two years and graduated with a certificate in barbering. Not long after that, I tested and received my Master’s Barbers license.

I was now official and certified in the art. I began cutting in a shop where I grew my clientele and started another venture of mine, True Beard Oil Co, a facial hair and skin grooming company in 2016. Then in 2019, I jumped out to open my very own barbershop, True Potential Barbering Studio. I found the decision to become a barber one of the best decisions I have ever made.

This choice opened doors that I realized I always wanted to walk through. Make my own decisions, decide the climate and community of my environment, and give opportunities to individuals who have the same ambitions as I do, while still taking advantage of opportunities and creating goals for myself. Thank God for vision, choice, manifestation, and creativity.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. This journey has been filled with so many potholes. There have been days at the beginning of barbering where I made little to no money ending a whole work week with about $40 dollars as the payout. Worked two jobs just to keep it going. Learning the business instead of just cutting hair.

Learning the process of business creation and structure. Creating an identity and brand. How to become the barber with the chair that people want to sit in. Learning different aspects of financial literacy. Growing in an environment where you have to adjust and keep your professionalism.

Wearing different hats, such as owner, barber, manager, marketer, leader, associate, and friend. Not making the best decisions. Having unwavering faith. Following my gut and instincts in the unseen territory. Development as a man and business operator in a positive direction.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Savannah is historically beautiful, growing, and becoming more diverse. What I least like is that there is an energy that lacks community togetherness. Most of the time the city feels separated.
