Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Cauthern.
Hi Tammy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always been drawn to helping people. I like people and I’m an extrovert who thrives on spending time with others. People make sense to me; once you hear about their experiences, lives, and history the way they think and behave is understandable. Because I enjoy hearing people’s stories and have a large amount of empathy, being a therapist feels natural to me. I was often the friend that others would go to when they were having a hard time.
I started out my mental health career by interning at a community mental health center in rural Kentucky. From there, I worked in acute and residential care at a psychiatric hospital. That experience taught me a lot about what good mental health care should and shouldn’t be. I am currently at Solstice Point Counseling in Oglethorpe square in downtown Savannah. I love my job and it affords me the luxury of specializing in the populations that I’m most drawn to. I specialize in offering therapeutic support for people in the LGBTQIA+ community and many of my clients are SCAD students.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The evolution of my career has been an interesting one. I worked for the state as a social worker briefly after I graduated but I left shortly afterward because there wasn’t a lot of room for growth. The psychiatric hospital that followed was a trial by fire. I got invaluable experience working with individuals that struggled with persistent and severe mental illness but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth.
I felt like the austere environment, poor staffing, lack of resources, and profit-driven policies were oftentimes inadequate to provide really good care to a vulnerable population. It was hard working for a place that I felt needed to improve a lot of things but I stayed for a few years and moved into private practice when a former coworker called me about an opening at her practice. Private practice has been wonderful and fulfilling in a lot of ways.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re a holistic therapy group with a focus on mind and body health. We have nutritionists and therapists to empower clients to meet their emotional, mental, and physical needs. I believe in offering a non-judgmental, welcoming, and affirming space for LGBTQ+individuals, POC, and people from all walks of life.
What were you like growing up?
Outgoing, people-oriented, empathetic, courageous, loyal, and fierce. I love all kinds of people and can find something positive about pretty much everyone.
