Community Highlights: Meet Tara Gowen of Coastal Glo & Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Gowen.

Hi Tara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the lowcountry really began in Savannah, which will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s where I first fell in love with this area and built the foundation for everything I do today. Over the years, I’ve grown not just as a stylist but also as a businesswoman, and that growth eventually led me to Hilton Head Island. Moving north opened new doors for me and my family, and it’s given me the opportunity to create a space where clients feel truly cared for, inside and out. Along the way, I’ve learned that it’s not just about great hair — it’s about building confidence, nurturing self-love, and giving people a place to relax and feel seen. That passion is what’s guided me from Savannah to Hilton Head, and it continues to inspire every step forward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, there have been seasons of uncertainty, hard lessons, and tough decisions. Early on, I struggled with the balancing act of being a mom, wife, and business owner — it often felt like I was being pulled in a hundred directions. I’ve also faced challenges in the industry itself, from working in environments that didn’t align with my values to taking the leap of faith to create something better. Those moments were stressful, but they also shaped me. Each struggle pushed me to grow stronger, think bigger, and focus on what truly matters: creating a salon culture that is positive, ethical, and client-centered. Looking back, the roadblocks were really steppingstones that helped me build the vision I have today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is more than just a salon — it’s a place where beauty and wellness come together. We specialize in customized color, modern cuts, and treatments that not only transform hair but also support overall self-care. What truly sets us apart is the experience we create for our clients. From the moment someone walks through the door, our goal is to make them feel welcomed, listened to, and pampered.

I’m most proud of the culture we’re building. It’s rooted in integrity, education, and genuine care. We use professional products we believe in, we take the time to teach clients how to care for their hair at home, and we’ve created an atmosphere where both clients and stylists feel valued.

At the end of the day, our brand is about more than hair — it’s about confidence, self-love, and connection. I want readers to know that whether you’re coming in for a color transformation, a blowout, or a little self-care, you’ll leave not only looking good, but feeling good, too.

How do you define success?
For me, success is so much more than numbers — it isn’t measured by how many employees I have or the revenue my salon generates. Success is written on the faces of our guests when they leave glowing, feeling confident and cared for. It looks like happy stylists who feel supported, and a healthy balance between work and life. Many salons talk about creating that kind of culture, but few truly achieve it. Of course, a business has to be profitable to thrive, but my definition of success will always come back to people — fulfilled clients, a strong team, and a positive environment that uplifts everyone who walks through our doors.
