Today, we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Hunt.
Hi Taylor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in yoga because I was getting sober from drugs and alcohol and used it as a tool for my recovery.
After a year of practice, I did teacher training, and it gave me the opportunity to teach in treatment centers. Once I started, I wanted to teach at a traditional studio and show people how yoga can transform their lives, similar to mine. I wanted to help people get sober and live a better life.
I started Ashtanga Yoga Columbus, which has been open for ten years. My family and I recently relocated to the South and opened Ashtanga Yoga Savannah. We’re really happy to be here.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a small business, there are always challenges. Our biggest challenge has been introducing a new community to a different style of yoga and mindfulness they’re not familiar with.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ashtanga Yoga Savannah?
We teach Ashtanga Yoga in the morning, a practice I learned in Mysore, India, when I lived there. I’m known as an International yoga teacher, and I have a certain designation that allows me to teach worldwide. There are only 100 people who have the same designation as me.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been in long term sobriety and I give access to a population that normally wouldn’t practice yoga. I started a nonprofit called the Trini Foundation that offers yoga scholarships for people in recovery nationwide.
We teach early morning yoga practices at 6 am with highly qualified teachers that have all studied in Mysore, India. If someone wants to start a yoga practice we would love to have them.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
My family has supported me, as well as my teacher, Sharath Jois, in Mysore, India. They’ve empowered me and given me the confidence to go out into the community and teach.
