Conversations with Becky Prescott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Prescott.

Hi Becky, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hi, I’m Becky Prescott, owner and the one-woman-band behind Alice and Pearl. My journey to Alice and Pearl began out of necessity, really. I had been working behind the scenes in food TV for almost 10 years which involved traveling all over the country working in different locations on different shows. Then, I had a baby and all of that had to change. I had always loved sewing, and just crafting in general, as well as all things retro, so I started brainstorming trying to figure out how I could incorporate all of that, and my love for cooking, into a business, and Alice and Pearl was born!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The journey was kind of rough in the beginning, because I had no experience running a business, so there was a lot of trial and error. I started very small by just selling some potholders at a local kitchen store downtown. That lead to doing a few pop-up shops and farmer’s markets. Then, I decided to branch out into making aprons for adults and kids, and slowly, but surely, I ended up with all of the products I offer now. Thankfully, shortly after I began my business, handmade makers markets started becoming a much bigger deal in Savannah, and across the country. It was sort of like “right place, right time”. Since then, I have built a website that allows customers to shop online, and I now also have my products in many local shops, and even a couple out of state. It was never easy navigating the whole thing, but I just kept at it and learned as I went. I’m STILL learning new things every single day!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in retro, kitschy, and vintage-inspired kitchen accessories for adults and kids. All of the products are handmade by me, that includes cutting out each and every piece of fabric and sewing all of the products, as well as all aspects of the business, including social media, packaging, shipping, ordering new supplies, etc. It is a one-woman show and I run it all out of my home. I think what sets me apart from others is the retro vibe that runs through every aspect of the business, even down to the name. Alice is my grandmother and Pearl is my Husband’s Grandmother and I try to honor them in everything I do. I even have a retro camper that I use for pop-up shops named Frieda, after my Great Aunt Frieda!

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is being able to live a creative, adventurous life with my family and friends, because I don’t think I would be able to live any other way!
