Conversations with Hannah Bang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Bang.

Hi Hannah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Hannah (JeongHyeon) Bang. I am an artist. I love a green color that makes me feel comfortable. I am studying Fine Art with Painting Major and Fiber minor. I love playing with colors in my artwork. I am from South Korea, lived in the United States since 2018 for Savannah College Art and Design.

I love SCAD because they have several located campuses, such as Savannah, Atlanta, and Lacoste, and also there was a Hong Kong campus; for this summer, I am going to Lacoste in France. After the summer quarter, I am one of the students who have an experience on all SCAD campuses. I try to get many different experiences in my life because they relate to what I believe.

I believe imagination is only as interesting as the lived experiences that feed it. I use art as an act of pure imagination. It is an inextricable aspect of my life, as it is a means to engage with the world and an outlet to project my thoughts and observations. I understand the act of sharing is a vital part of the process; my hope is for viewers to find interest within my art or to find something new to reflect on, no matter how minimal the impact may be.

I love to show my work to you; I hope you enjoy my story!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and also No. Everyone has their challenges in life. I also do, but I am Christian. God help and save me every time. Painting, making videos, and creating art are challenging to bring out my perspective.

Still, a clear sense of motivation and reasons, even if they are only valuable to me, help me contain to create artwork.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I want to share my current exhibition at Cedar House Gallery, Savannah, GA.

My art series is titled “Make a Safe Space.” This exhibition’s central painting is called “The Blessed Life.” My “The Blessed Life” artwork is a digital collage of unfinished paintings. The re-composition technique is the foundation of my art series. I compose visual elements in both digital and physical ways.

I came up with the idea of “The Blessed Life” based on my belief that life is unexpected and hard to understand at the moment, but when we look back, we can see how everything is connected and attributed to God’s love. That is the reason why I use this re-compose technique with my paintings on a grid. So, I keep the key points of my The Blessed Life art for these pieces and re-compose the ideas and images by using different mediums and objects.

For example, I painted oil pastel and markers on a chair, dyed rugs, and created a wallpaper pattern. Various entities are inspired by the same theme, surrounded by everyday objects to make people feel comfortable with my work.

Personally, the object that makes me feel safe is my bedding. I feel comfortable when I have it, and I think the same comfort in my art. When I bring my art into another space, I feel comfortable and confident, like, “I have my art; everything will be okay.”

Often, people get anxious or nervous in new and unfamiliar environments. I believe that artwork can positively change the mood of such unfamiliar environments. To express this belief, I combined the comfort of my bedding with the creativity of my art. I designed a painting and printed it out on a queen size duvet because I did not only want to cover my body but also uplift the environment. Then, I took the duvet to unfamiliar areas in the city as a part of my performance.

In my exhibition ‘Make a Safe Space,’ I had a specific goal in mind when planning. I chose to make postcards and stickers to sell at the show and allowed the audience to self-evaluate the cost amount of the artwork. All proceeds of this exhibition went to the local shelters of Savannah Union Mission.

When you visit my website, there has more variety of works I made.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Welcome to Fine Arts! I always try to live my life as an art. Get everyday inspiration, and be careful of what you absorb in your life. It might come out in your artwork. Well-documented artwork; show your work to people.
