Conversations with John Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Evans.

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is John Evans and I am an actor and fashion advertiser at SCAD!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road is a thing nobody experiences. Growing up in a small town with very little artistic connections, you find yourself creating your own power and experiencing a culture shock when you attend a popular art school. The culture shock being copious amounts of favoritism and comparison.

Comparison is something I believe everyone does… wether that be physical appearance or your artistic talents. LinkedIn is a confidence killer – it is harsh to scroll on. You try so hard and yet you STILL feel like nothing you do is good enough… better yet, you feel BEHIND. To be honest, I have no answer for those feelings. It is something you have to experience and get through with time and patience.

As for favoritism, it always occurs especially in acting departments. Without being too problematic, I will just say that I would love to start seeing some new names on major stage productions. Everyone deserves a chance to create something great!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specifically find myself feeling high amounts of positive energy in a fashion and/or performance setting. That feeling has been hard to find for so many years. I love creating artistic direction for brands that would surprise the target audience. That is all what my own personal brand is about as well. I find the “dark” to be safe while the “light” to be uncomfortable, so I love to chase the light. Fashion is something to feel confident in, and tying into my purpose of performing, confidence is a staple emotion every human should feel. With campaigns, you only add onto that feeling… you let people know that you see them.

Acting is a craft nobody can completely understand in a night. I am involved in, what I call, the “feeling business”. Being an actor means having unending curiosities for the ways of life and how people interact. Humans are something I could study for hours, especially the psychology between conversations and emotions. I get a life full of experiencing scary things to grow my emotional golden box and that is a gift I could cherish forever.

What were you like growing up?
Annoying and energetic. Some of my friends could say I am still like that, and if they do, then I praise those words. Let me be who I am meant to be! I try to stay young at heart!
