Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Myrick.
Hi Katelyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing photography in my first year of high school, however, I didn’t fall in love with it until my trip to Ireland. I enjoyed the history and moments of time I could capture with a single image.
After that trip every summer I was fortunate enough to go to different places in the world and document what I experienced while I was there. I knew this was the career and path I wanted for my life so around my junior year in high school I started looking for colleges that would be a starting point for that.
SCAD was my top choice and I have only grown in my passion and skill from being here.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think any decision is an easy choice. I had my doubts and questions as to if pursuing photography was a good decision. For example, if I was good enough and when outside parties would say it’s not a reliable career.
Of course, these created more questions but I know I have the talent in me and the passion to make my dreams a reality.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work varies based on the feelings I’m going through in my life or the places I’m currently in. I prefer documentary and travel over commercial however I have done projects in the past that merge the two. I am most proud of my growing creativity because that was something I had to learn and build.
So, now I have an endless mind of thoughts and ideas that make my work powerful. I hope what sets me apart from others is the fact that I don’t limit myself and I will chase an idea until it’s completed no matter how hard the world or the industry tries to hide it.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is skill and talent are developed and worked for.
