Conversations with Kloey Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kloey Powell

Hi Kloey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
All of my life, music has been an incredibly massive part of my life and who I am. I have childhood memories of music blaring from the kitchen, which was practically a make-shift dance floor. Another memory recently became full circle for me, as I photographed Hannah Wicklunds show in Savannah, who I had seen perform in City market when I was very young. Varying genres created a sound track for my life. Although I had always heard it, it wasn’t until around 4 years ago that I fell in love with rock and roll. Poor attempts at trying to live out my rockstar dreams (though I still have a little hope) led me to my dream of being in front of the stage with a camera, rather than on it with a microphone.
In May of 2023 I decided to experiment with that dream by buying a simple used camera and taking pictures of my classmates in my guitar class. That one experiment drew me in astronomically further, and seldom did I show up to a local rock show without my camera in hand. Since then, my experience has only expanded and my dream of being a concert photographer has begun to seem not so far out of touch.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While I have faced some struggles, I believe that if you’re travelling on a bumpy road, your destination will be better than where you started. I have struggled with different aspects of photography, but in struggling I have only made myself a better photographer.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer with a speciality in concert photography. When I branch out, it’s with portrait shots and in nature. However, I would really say that my speciality is capturing the emotion in everyday life, whether I am snapping a shot of a singer pouring her heart out, or simply catching my friends laughing during conversation. Although I don’t score passes to huge concerts with mega-famous bands, I find myself most in place at a small venue, crouching down and dodging elbows to score my perfect shot.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Social media is an incredible place for networking. I specifically use instagram to find contact information for artists or their teams, along with using it to interact with other photographers.
