Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt And Nicole Gibson.
Hi Matt and Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife team that owns Story Oak Media – Matt runs the production side and Nicole runs the marketing, admin, and soon the studio side.
Nicole is originally from Wilmington Island and Matt is originally from Waycross, Georgia. We are both graduates of Georgia Southern University. Nicole earned a BS in Public Relations in 2005 and went on to work for several marketing/advertising agencies and later in marketing for Siemens – all in Atlanta.
Matt earned a BS in Television Production/Broadcasting and Graphic Design in 2005. Matt worked in media producing videos for Andy Stanley’s churches, North Point Ministries in Atlanta. He worked there for 13 years.
In 2018, while still living in Atlanta, we took the leap and started our own media production company, Story Oak Media (storyoakmedia.com). We’re a full-service production house. We do it all – from pre-production, to the shoot, and post-production (editing) – which happens to be our expertise. We work with non-profits, small businesses, and corporate clients – we have even worked with Disney!
We decided to move to Richmond Hill in 2023 – we missed family, the slower pace of life, and all the history and nature that Savannah provides.
Even more exciting is that in May 2025 we will be opening a 3,000+ sq foot studio in Richmond Hill! It will serve not only our video clients but will also be available for rent for other videographers and photographers. We will also have a podcast studio and a conference room available to the community for rent as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
During Covid we lost all of our upcoming projects in one day and had to pivot quickly in order for our business to survive the pandemic. We pivoted by helping various companies and non-profits with their digital events, live streaming, and pre-recordings, and did lots of course videos.
It is always a risk when you go off on your own and start a new business, especially when you have a family to support. And it is a risk to grow your business as well. We have always been mindful to try to run our business debt free and up until we had our studio space, we had very little overhead.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We specialize in post-production and storytelling. We’re problem-solvers. We love to shoot as Matt has the creative eye as a Director of Photography. We love putting all the pieces of the puzzle together to create an amazing story that captures its audience.
Our high standard of excellence, friendly down-to-earth approach, and work ethic sets us apart. We make people feel things through video. We will ALWAYS over deliver.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Matt had a great mentor though an older gentleman who was a family friend and engineer for Georgia Public Television. His name was Knox Carreker. Chances are if you’re listening to the radio or watching public television in Georgia, there’s a great chance Knox had his hand in it. Knox helped at their church as Matt grew up, where he found his love for making videos since he was 12-years-old. Knox invested in Matt through knowledge, gear, and computers. We encourage younger students to get involved in video programs early, whether through school or church. Help where you see a need, it may just become your career.
