Conversations with Tamara Gibson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Gibson.

Hi Tamara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where are you from, and how did you get here?

I originally from the Big Apple, NYC but back in 2012, I made the move down south to Georgia.

How did you get into photography?

I’ve always had a deep love for the arts, but when it came to choosing my college major, I hesitated. Eventually, in 2009, I decided to embrace my passion and haven’t looked back since!

What do you love about it?

I just love being creative, it’s such a fulfilling outlet for me. The best part about photography, though, is being able to capture precious moments and memories for my clients. It brings me so much joy!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the toughest challenges I faced was turning my artistic passion into a profitable business. It’s a common hurdle for creative entrepreneurs, but with perseverance, it can be overcome.

At first, I struggled with the business side of things, but now I’ve come to enjoy it and feel like I’m excelling because of it.

I’ve also found that over time, the creative process can become stagnant when you’re only creating for clients. To keep things fresh and inspired, I make sure to set aside some time for personal projects and to create just for the sake of creating. It’s a great way to stay connected to my artistic roots!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer and I’m lucky enough to own not one, but three different photography companies. Here’s a quick rundown of what each one offers:

  1. Tamara Gibson Photography – This is where I do all of my wedding and portrait work. It’s my pride and joy!
  2. The Velvet Oak – In 2016, I started an associate team that specializes in wedding and portrait photography and videography. We’ve grown a ton since then and now cover locations all over the US and beyond.
  3. Querencia Creative – This is where my associate and I work on all of our commercial projects. From brand photography to product shots, corporate events to food photography, we cover it all! We even do wardrobe styling, as well as hair and makeup and creative directing.

I’m really proud of how much I’ve grown my businesses over the years, and I’m constantly looking for new opportunities to expand my reach. In fact, I’m currently working on an education site for creatives, The Creative Hustle Academy! It’s a space where I share resources and tips for creative entrepreneurs who are looking to turn their passion into profit. I’m so excited about this project and the things we have lined up!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important things you can do as a creative entrepreneur is to stay self-aware. That means taking the time to celebrate your successes, but also being willing to learn from your mistakes.

It’s so important to stay humble and grounded, and never forget where you started. And most importantly, always keep learning and growing – there’s no limit to what you can achieve if you stay open to new experiences and opportunities!
