Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Daniels.
Hi Dee, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in a small town just south of Richmond, Virginia. After being encouraged by my parents, my school principal, and a driving force within to find and use my voice – I took a part-time job at a small AM radio station in Chester, Virginia. After learning how to operate a soundboard during a baseball game, relay a mouthful of information into the mic between songs, and receive phone calls from immediately curious listeners on the hotline – I fell in love with this form of entertainment quite quickly.
Since my first day in the booth at that little radio station, I’ve been very blessed to use my voice on 16 different radio stations, two television stations, my own award- winning and highly-rated morning show, and over 10 podcast series. I love local radio, and over the years, I have grown to understand the undeniably strong relationships between local media, local businesses, and the community they serve. By learning and relearning these relationships and being determined to decipher what they need to survive and to thrive in this ever-changing industry, I have built an extraordinary career doing what I am passionate about.
After years of watching many local businesses struggle to afford advertising on these radio and television stations, my partner Megan and I decided to take that knowledge of media and audience relationship-building to the next level. We drew on Megan’s background in marketing and working with small businesses, having started three herself, as well as extensive work with nonprofits through fundraising and serving on several boards, and my media expertise and started Flow Wellness and Media in Virginia. We built our own mobile podcast studio and helped many local business owners and nonprofits develop their own long-form marketing storytelling tool in the form of a podcast. While serving Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area, we developed numerous podcasts focusing on a wide range of topics from wedding planning to integrative therapy and holistic products to bourbon tastings.
We are so proud that we were able to expand this business to now serve Savannah, Georgia, and other coastal communities under a new name – Dee Daniels Media. Since moving here in the fall of 2021, we have launched “Savannah Speaks” and “Made of Savannah,” with several more podcasts about to launch. Alana Dykes has joined our team as a Producer and Creative Content Creator and is using her knowledge and mastery in content development, creative video production, project management, and social media campaigns. With this amazing team, we’re also thrilled to be serving other clients with services that provide creative content, consulting, and meaningful storytelling in their marketing.
Our passion for communications, content creation, forming deep relationships within the community, and stimulating mindful conversation is at an all-time high! We’d love to show people how to tell their story!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The easy part in creating our business has been that we were quickly very aware there is a need for small businesses and nonprofits to have a platform to get their message out to the public. One obstacle was when Covid hit; we had been working primarily face to face recording our episodes, which we were no longer able to do, as well as how small businesses and nonprofits took such a hit during that time. The other obstacle is having the time and opportunity to fully educate people on why our podcast development services are much more elevated than what most people can produce on their own. With our state-of-the-art mobile studio, as well as Dee’s 26 years in media and radio, we have the expertise to make your podcast sound top-notch! That includes editing for sound quality and content. Overall, we have found the small business community in Savannah to be very warm and welcoming.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are podcast developers and content creators, which also lends itself to being business and nonprofit coaches, especially when it comes to creative marketing. Business owners and non-profit organizers are experts in their fields and passionate about their missions. Our job as podcast developers is to show off our expertise by partnering with them in growing their business. We give them a polished, well-produced, and high-quality podcast. We also walk them through the best ways to have that message resonate with their target client, customer, or donor. We are most proud of being able to help small businesses and nonprofits shine in a unique way and using our coaching abilities to help them get comfortable on the podcast platform telling their story as only they can.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
The very first time I had an audience that was not a family member was when I was about seven years old. I came home from church and stood on top of the slide in my backyard, and recreated the message I had heard that morning. About halfway through my theatrical production, I noticed the neighbors that lived behind us were sitting quietly on their screen porch, listening to every word. My performance was met with thunderous applause. That was a very exciting first example for me of capturing people’s attention with well-crafted storytelling.
