Today we’d like to introduce you to Faustine Lavie.
Hi Faustine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started ballet when I was 3 years old in my hometown Toulon, France. I’ve danced my whole life and never imagined stopping. I knew I wanted to become a professional dancer when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I moved to Paris around age 10, then to NY in 2015 to attend The Ailey School. After graduation, I started auditioning and dancing with different dance companies. I do very different styles, ballet, modern, contemporary and I also now work with visual artists as well. I love taking part in very diverse projects.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had some struggles, especially during my teenage years. My body changed a lot, and it was very hard to accept it, especially since dance is an art with a certain aesthetic required, and you spend all your days in front of mirrors. I also had to make a lot of sacrifices, no going out with friends, not as much vacations because I was dancing. It required a lot of dedication, with of course ups and downs. But I’m proud of myself for never giving up, and it’s definitely thanks to dance and its hardship that I became the strong woman I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a contemporary, modern and ballet professional dancer. It’s hard to describe my specificities because as dancers, we’re all very unique and have our own original way to move. I’d say I’m known to be a strong dancer, very grounded and in the floor, I love doing floorwork, but I’m also known to have nice lines and aerial arms from my huge ballet background. I’m pretty confident in saying that I’m a very versatile dancer. I also started doing hustle, a couple dance born in the disco years, a few months ago, and we’re now getting ready with my partner to do some exhibitions and competitions.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I can be very sensitive. I’m a very strong person, physically and mentally, and I’m very proud, so I don’t like showing my emotions too much. Most people don’t really actually know how sensitive I am inside. My strong personality and competitiveness definitely come out more.
