Daily Inspiration: Meet Gracie Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Smith.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Founded in 2020, SALT is an innovative technology-focused organization.

We combine industry and academia to bring cutting-edge ideas and technology directly to consumers. We envision a fully affianced company that transforms its clients and community both digitally and practically.

We harness the creativity and ingenuity of our region to engineer a technological impact on our community, which we hope will be seen through the coming generations.

Georgia Southern University provided the perfect atmosphere for the SALT Program to begin and thrive. After multiple applicants in August, we landed an impressive group of student developers. These hard-working individuals have been eager to learn with a passion for technology. Our first semester provided time for growth. We have since used feedback to make necessary improvements for future semesters.

As of Spring 2022, our SALT team consists of approximately 20 Georgia Southern University and Savannah State University students and alumni. Each semester, we complete real-world development tasks at companies with additional collaboration between software developers and engineers, senior engineers, and the cohort of apprentices.

Moving forward, SALT will continue to add resources, additional guidance, and clarity to the apprentice positions. This includes expanding our team, locations, and phases within our program!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a new business always comes with struggles.

Structuring a company with a rock-solid structure (or impenetrable wall) means hours of planning and trials, both smooth and rough. We are still planning the company with finite details and the same goal in mind.

From teaching new students in the beginning stages of SALT to figuring out how to increase our employment network, our struggles have been abundant but necessary for the company to continue moving forward.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Gracie Smith, SALT’s (Southern Automation Logistics & Technology) Executive Director, and Senior at Georgia Southern University. I will be graduating Fall of 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

My passion consists of giving back to the community by helping create additional opportunities for the world’s future leaders. I work towards building the infrastructure and expansions for our technology incubator program.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep moving forward. Learn from your mistakes and failures and grow.

Don’t ever stop growing and learning. Do everything you can to the best of your ability, and most importantly, if you want something, you should go for it.

Don’t let anyone tell you differently or stop you. The only person limiting you is yourself. Finally, don’t be afraid of failure; because failure is proof you are trying.
