Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Carrier.
Hi Joey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Joey Carrier and I’m a film and dramatic writing major at SCAD. Growing up in a small, everyone-knows-everyone town in East Tennessee, I was able to analyze all aspects of people from their hobbies, loves, hates, and flaws. This basic understanding of what makes people tick is really what inspired me to be a writer. I love people and love seeing how we interact with others and why!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like everyone, 2020 really derailed things and caused me to spend my first year of college on a computer screen. While I’m so fortunate to have been in the comfort of my home, I wasn’t able to make any friends and, because of this, could not pursue my dreams of writing and making movies. I’m glad I didn’t give up, though, because once the rain clouds cleared, I was able to meet the greatest people on the planet and finally make my dreams a reality!
Although, filming over the summer has brought some challenges to the production of the film such as a decrease in crew availability and the inability to rent equipment from SCAD. We have pushed through thanks to the donations on our Indiegogo and locals who are gracious enough to lend us materials and locations!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a film student with a concentration in screenwriting and story development. In high school, I would usually wear all the hats, taking over the job of writer, director, and editor.
During this time, I created a short film called “The Ghost of Elsewhere”, a dark drama about two siblings dealing with the death of their mother. While this film is far from my best work, it did get me into the All American High School Film Festival as well as mini awards from smaller festivals in my area.
Once I got to college, I mostly focused on writing and developing my skills in character and story, which has led me to the film that I am now making: “In The Nick of Time.” This is a film about an actress searching for closure, who stumbles upon a young shaman with the ability to change the past, The Nick of Time. While this story is very fun, it also has a lot to say about self-acceptance and regret, which I hope will help it stand out amongst the jungle of short films made every year.
I am such a huge fan of so many filmmakers here at SCAD and I hope that one day I can stand amongst the best of them with my character-oriented stories intended to make people feel like they are understood and can be the main characters of their own stories.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
While I have struggled with a ton of self-doubt throughout my life, I can never seem to bring myself to give up. This resilience is really what keeps me making things as well as constantly trying to change and break the monotony. I want each story I make to be new and refreshing and touch the lives of an entirely new set of people.
