Daily Inspiration: Meet Krystle Jewell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystle Jewell.

Krystle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I decided to go to beauty school because when I was a kid, I have teased pretty badly bc of my hair. So in an effort to help me find comfort in my own skin. My grandmother took me to a hairstylist who taught me how to care for my hair and how to style it and it truly changed my life and gave me confidence that I was lacking. That bloomed into a love of doing people’s hair myself. I would jump at the opportunity to do my friend’s hair.

So after high school, I went to beauty school. After about 10 years in the industry, I found myself living in Savannah, GA where my love of helping people embrace their natural curl texture began. I personally found it difficult to keep my own hair sleek and smooth in this climate and discovered the harder I tried to keep it smooth the worse it got. After a while, a friend had suggested DevaCurl training so I researched it and then decided to pursue it.

That first class from DevaCurl changed my life and the entire direction of my career. I discovered how good it felt to embrace my own texture and how it helped me learn to love myself and give myself grace. I wanted to share that feeling with every client who sat in my chair. So I pursued all the education I could find on natural texture and brought that back to my clients. My career took off from there!

Now I educate and mentor within my home salon, 40 volume salon, and spa, I am on the education team for Innersense organic hair care and in the process of creating a team of curly hair professionals at 40 Volume. The future is wide open and I am so excited to make it all happen!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly has not been smooth. It was tough getting started. I was doing what I could to learn more so I could confidently cut all curl textures. But I didn’t have all Curl textures in my chair.

I had to figure out how to transition from being a Jack of all trades kind of stylist to a specialist. I always had a stack of business cards on me ( still do actually!) that I would hand to anyone I came across who had curly hair.

I put my name on every group and community FB page, I started posting curly hair exclusively on my Instagram and changed my handle, I would do my best to convert my flat iron addicted clients, just anything I could to get the practice I needed and help people learn to love their curls.

It’s taken years to build my foundation. But I did it! There has certainly been trial and error. But I like to treat every ‘mistake’ as an opportunity for growth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist and one of the first and very few curly hair specialists in Savannah, GA. I now also head up a team of curly hair professionals at 40 volume salon.

I am very much known for my curly hair cutting and styling techniques. I also offer customized color services for curly hair. I am extremely proud of my ability to make people feel comfortable and welcome in my salon space.

I think what sets me apart is most likely my focus on continuing education. I’m 17 years deep in my profession and still seek out and attend multiple classes a year. On top of being a student, I also am a teacher. I truly believe we learn to perfect our skills even more through teaching what we’ve learned to others.

I also deeply enjoy seeing the aha! Moments with my own students and watching people succeed. So I teach and mentor in my salon, and for Innersense organic haircare.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
