Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Monroe.
Hi Nicky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started rapping when I was 6 years old. Just for fun with my family at my grandparents’ house. That was before Cd players were popular. There was no YouTube to download beats from or anything. So, I literally used to take two tape players, put em in front of each other and record the end of a song where the instrumental was the only thing playing for 30 seconds to a minute. After 6 to 12 takes, I recorded enough to where I can create a full record. Since then, times have changed definitely. I went from YouTube beats to creating my own as well. Now here I am many years later still learning and critiquing my craft. I have done small shows and big. Including the Apollo Theater in New York. I have opened up for artists I listened to as a kid and looked up to, such as bizzy bone from bone thugz. Although I have done so much to be proud of, I am still looking to take my career to the next level and always outdoing the old me.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not easy at all. I was offered a $70000 deal. Although that sounds amazing, I was young, and it didn’t last long when I hired a company to take my career to the next level and was robbed for 35 grand. Since then, I was never offered another deal as sweet. On top of that, I have been homeless about 3 times and always find myself falling short. No one wants to respect the lesbian artists unless we have thousands of dollars to spend with them. So, it makes it hard being a female and a lesbian at the same time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write music, I make beats, and I also engineer from time to time. But I can also do photo and video editing. I’m like the media guru. But I love being the artist and getting in the booth. What sets me aside from the modern-day music is that I rap fast but not mumble rap. You can understand every word I’m saying.
