Today we’d like to introduce you to Siyi Tang.
Hi Siyi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
From the time I was a little child, I loved to take pictures everywhere with my camera, even though I could only use the fully automatic gear and didn’t know what the buttons meant. However, my mom, an enlightened parent unlike most Chinese parents, raved about the landscape photos I took during my trip to Tibet. This definitely inspired me and got me into photography. Growing up, I was always interested in literature and art; I wrote poetry, wrote fan fiction, did voiceovers, took photos, and made short films. While pursuing my BA in Media Studies and Media Production at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I slowly discovered that photography was the perfect medium for me. It can be a still poem or a moment of reflection, it can be digital or textured prints, it can be enjoyed in conjunction with a particular short poem, and it can even be a philosophical process of research.
As I was about to graduate from my undergraduate program, I decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography in Savannah because it was a composite discipline that allowed me to express all of my thoughts, feelings, and life experiences together and because it was a love that I had held on to since I was a child.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Haha, it’s never a smooth road. Studying and living in the US as a foreigner is a very difficult thing in itself, which means I need to spend more time and energy to talk to people and read obscure texts. Especially when I am a short Asian woman, my shooting conditions have certain limitations, such as I am afraid to go out at night alone with my camera.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
As a young Chinese female artist, I hope to make more people hear the voices of women through my ability. The women here are not only myself but also more people in this society. One of the photography projects I am currently working on is a project called Period., which is about women’s menstruation. This project aims to break the social taboos of the past and normalize the topic of menstruation. I did my first solo show about this at the beginning of May. Some of these works have been exhibited all over the country, including one of Savannah’s most famous galleries, Cedar House.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I used to be a swimmer and dreamed of going to the Olympics. I love dressing up my dolls and taking them on trips.
I once self-published a fan fiction.
