Today we’d like to introduce you to Sukhyog Singh
Hi Sukhyog, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Colors have always been my sanctuary. Growing up, I was fortunate to attend a boarding school in Gwalior, India, where the art room quickly became my refuge—a place where I could express myself freely. My formal journey into art began in 8th grade when I started learning traditional Indian art forms. I found myself drawn to the storytelling quality of most of the folk art.
As my practice evolved, I began exploring how these traditional art forms could transcend their conventional mediums. This curiosity led me to experiment with accessory design and ceramics—finding ways to bring these centuries-old artistic traditions into contemporary, functional pieces.
What brings me the greatest joy is seeing people connect with these cultural elements through everyday objects— It’s this intersection of tradition, utility, and storytelling that continues to inspire me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While these challenges haven’t always been easy to navigate, they’ve become essential to my artistic voice., my journey so far has been shaped by personal struggles that have ultimately deepened my work.
Living with aspects of my identity that I couldn’t fully express in India created a particular tension in my art. My queerness—something I’ve kept private in my home country—has profoundly influenced my creative expression. This duality of experience has led me to explore contrast between public presentation and private truth in my designs.
After immigrating, I faced the reality of navigating between cultures. Although this transition offered new freedom for self-expression, it also brought challenges of belonging and cultural displacement. As an immigrant artist, I’ve had to find my place in new communities while still honoring my roots.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work at the intersection of ceramics and fashion as both an accessory designer and ceramic artist. My specialty lies in reimagining what’s possible when these two distinct worlds collide. I’m known for creating editorial handbags made entirely from ceramics—functional art pieces that challenge conventional boundaries between fashion, and sculpture.
My ceramic handbags begin as explorations in form and texture. I draw inspiration from traditional Indian art , reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens.
What I’m most proud of is developing techniques that allow ceramic pieces to maintain both their visual impact and functional integrity. something that has become my signature approach.
What I believe sets my work apart is this deliberate fusion of seemingly disparate worlds: the inpermanence of ceramics meeting the seasonality of fashion; traditional Indian artistry reimagined through contemporary silhouettes; elevated to statement art pieces. I’m particularly interested in how these ceramic accessories transform when worn—how they interact with light, movement, and the wearer’s own personal style.
My work invites people to experience ceramics beyond the expected tableware and decorative objects.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I had two teachers who have really helped me to explore and experiment and not to be scared of failure. My foundation in art truly began with Kirti Ghosh, my 8th grade art teacher in Gwalior. More than just teaching technical skills, she recognized something in me before I fully saw it in myself. Years later at SCAD, Professor Yves Paquette revolutionized my understanding of ceramics. He challenged me to push beyond conventional applications of the medium and to see clay as a material with limitless possibilities. When I first proposed merging ceramics with fashion accessories—an idea that many might have dismissed—Yves responded with genuine curiosity and technical problem-solving. His expertise helped me develop the techniques I use today to create ceramic handbags, while his encouragement gave me permission to develop my distinctive cross-disciplinary approach.
