Daily Inspiration: Meet Tristan Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Austin.

Tristan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I love coming up with stories. My mom asked me if I would like to do a whole story from beginning to end. I said I would try. She told me how stories need a beginning, something interesting, villains, and action, and then an end. We worked all weekend. She recorded me telling my story. She then wrote down what I said, and then I had her read it out loud. I then told her what I wanted to change, and she would record me again. I would get frustrated because the story didn’t sound like I wanted to; we did this a lot. And then, when the story was exactly how I wanted it, we worked on the cover. That was fun! We used my mom’s computer to create a LEGO black dinosaur for the cover of my book, Black Baby Dinosaur.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Writing is hard because the characters are all different, and then I have to remember where they come from. I do want to write more books. Now I am working on spelling, because I am not good at spelling. That is my biggest struggle. My mom helps me a lot by recording me telling my stories. My other struggle is getting more kids to read my book.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am now in 1st grade, but I wrote my first book in Kindergarten. I like writing stories and creating stories. Black Baby Dinosaur is going to have more storylines. I am working on a second book about the adventures of Black Baby Dinosaur and Black Baby Dragon. I guess I am proud of having a book in my library in Darien and on Amazon.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a Cub Scout and I have a dog named Scout, too! Well, and another dog named Roadie. I like ice cream, and one time I volunteered at a turtle rehab place in Costa Rica!
