Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Meng.
Hi Veronica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for photography began the moment I realized the power a single photograph could have. Back when I was in elementary school, my class was doing some sort of project and the teacher asked all of the students to bring in a baby picture of themselves. So, I went home and asked my mom for one of me, however, she was not able to find one.
Most of our photos had been stolen a few years beforehand, so the earliest picture she was able to find of me was a picture where I was around 4 years old. Needless to say, I felt embarrassed when I showed up to class and everyone kept asking me why I didn’t have a baby picture. Although it bothered me that I didn’t have a baby picture to show everyone and tell silly stories about the day the photo was taken, I truly loved hearing the stories behind everyone else’s photograph.
It was at that moment I also realized that one simple photograph could tell an amazing story and would allow us to connect to people in a whole new way! Then when I was about 15 years old, I received a basic 35mm camera for Christmas (1997). This opened my eyes even more. I began to see how happy I could make others by taking their picture.
I took pictures of everyone and everything; anytime I could. Some might say it was annoying, lol. For the longest time, photography was just a passion/hobby for me. After 20 years of photography being a hobby, I felt it was time to start believing in my dream and make it happen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am typically a very private person in my personal life, so I find that putting myself out there on social media (even if it is for my business) has been (still is) one of my biggest struggles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I photograph various types of portrait sessions (children, family, maternity, sports, etc).
I am not what some might call “Instagram worthy”, where everything is consistent and goes together smoothly. I love trying new techniques and playing with light. I feel that my ability to photograph in many different lighting situations sets me apart from others.
I’m not afraid to shoot in the full sun at high noon, nor am I afraid to at midnight when it’s dark. Each of those times will produce a different style and I am proud that I am able to give my clients the option to choose.
